So, to be completely honest I drank about 2/3rds of the bottle while reviewing it, but just couldn't finish the rest ... the more I drank it the harsher it became as that smoke and alcohol burn just kind of overtook my palate ... at 30% (and having had a few maibocks just a bit earlier) I was really feeling it, so I called it quits and went to bed.
Nah, thats just water from spraying the inside of the glass before I poured it.
Yea, Its weird because its clearly marketed as a beer (gimmick?), but I suspect the labeling of it has something to do with the legality of such a "beer" vs a "spirit".
Yea, I know of at least one brewer that does an eisbock (and a very nice one at that), but its only sold on tap at the taproom.

Goose Island is selling an eisbock they brewed with Freigeist (@TongoRad reviewed it in this thread), and they made a big deal about how its "illegal" to brew it in the US and thats why they brewed it over there and then imported it to the US.
Honestly, I cannot in any good faith say you should reconsider it ...

FWIW when a beer brewed with smoked malts has a meaty aspect to it I am not a fan. In contrast if the beer has a campfire aspect I enjoy drinking those beers.

That bottle of Urbock as you describe it would have been a challenge for me to finish as well.

    Cheers!

Aventinus dates back to 1907 and comes from the era when Mathilde Schneider ran the brewery covertly after her husband Georg died. It's an amazing classic.

The bottom pic is from a blind side-by-side I did last night. The top pic is from right now - I currently have a mix of the leftovers in my glass. I am not going to bother with a description of what it's like to drink Aventinus - there are plenty of posts in this thread that have that covered. Instead, I'll talk about the differences between these three beers.

The canned beer was from November 2020. The newer bottle was from September 2020 and the older bottle was from February 2020.

The canned beer tasted the freshest (and it was the freshest). The oldest bottle tasted the oldest. (Funny how that works out.) I liked the oldest beer the least. It lacked cohesion - the parts to it became disconnected in its age. It was even a tiny but funky (for lack of a better word). Having said that, all of those issues were relative to the other two beers. The old beer was still an extreme joy to drink. The newer bottle was the fruitiest of the group. It tasted like berries. The canned beer was the breadiest. Fruity qualities were muted. It was dry, airy and light compared to the bottled beer.

One important thing to point out - I just don't get the same control when pouring from a can. I'm a heathen who likes to keep yeast in the bottle when drinking Weissbier... and for me this is less possible with a can. I think this difference was a factor in how I perceived these 3 beers.

The can and the newer bottle were quite different to me. I couldn't tell you what the biggest cause of this was though. Might have been the age difference... differences in how much yeast I had in each glass... differences in bottle vs can fermentation... differences in how well the vessels kept the beer... differences in how well each one was treated over time. So, there are a lot of various factors at play here, but the good news is that both were great.

Good afternoon Bockers Three bock left for today.
First up is Einbecker's Ur-Bock Dunkel.
Clear brown/amber with a tall, fluffy khaki head that slowly dissolves into a thick film. Very nicely balanced with the molasses, caramel, dates offset by some peppery spice and drying hops. No coating in your mouth and no sticky aftertaste. This is an easy drinking delicious dunkel bock.

Yea, I was surprised considering how much I loved their maibock last year. That being said, drinking both the Goldfinger and Dovetail alongside the Hofbräu really highlighted their shortcomings in relation to an excellent maibock. I think if I had the Dovetail alone I would have thought more highly of it.

A break in the weather, enjoying this Schilling offering Brucius
    Cheers all

Poured from a 16 oz can dated 03/04/21 so 5 weeks.
A - Beautiful mahagony with some ruby tone, Excellent clarity, Carbonation is steadily feeding a lasting tight knit froth of off white.
S - Caramel, sweet brown sugar, light roast coffee. There is a slight hint of smoked malts as well
T - Caramelized sugars, in a good way, again threads of toffee, brown sweet bread, a hint of molasses, and roast hazelnut.
M - Medium in body, with all that caramel in the prior catagories the offering starts on the sweet side but mid palate shifts toward the dryer side, with a very elegant finish. Carbonation helps move things along.
O - A very good offering from Schilling, avoids the sweet dark side quite well.
    A worthy domestic Dopplebock

Thin Man Brewing Co. -- Eradicator (doppelbock)

    4.02/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Very dark garnet colored body; incredibly dense and creamy head, khaki in color; tiny flecks of foam pepper the glass. Toffee with a touch of coffee on the nose; roasted grains. Rich flavors; German chocolate cake; a fine underlying bitterness; cocoa and malted milk balls. Generally heavy body yet feels a bit watery initially, ends with a slight residual sugar stickiness; sweet mouthfeel.

This is a fine doppelbock. It delivers some pronounced chocolate notes, hides its ABV quite well, and offsets the robust sweetness with a low-key hop bitterness. The canning date is "Dec-28-2020 11:01".

    -----------

This was a chance find of mine in Colorado Springs. I was rather surprised to find a Buffalo, NY brewery doppelbock out here, but it's been a great little discovery.

The beer seems to open up quite favorably as it sits and warms, bringing a deeper, richer malt presence to the palate and dialing-down the sweetness. It kind of reminds me of Colorado Springs' Goat Patch Brewing Company's 'Doppelbock'. In both cases, I like the maltier yet less overtly sweetness that both beers bring to the table.

And it certainly makes for a refreshing late morning lunch beer after an early morning bicycle ride...

Looks like the game has changed. I wondered if people would go back an unlike ones to lower scores. No need to wonder. I am dropping fast, lost 5 already.

About ready to have the first of the day. Cheers everyone. It was a fun weekend.

I needed a bit of a palate cleanser, but wanted to stay with the theme, so I'm double dipping with Spring Landscape.
I can't get over how good this is. TBH it isn't a great helles bock (going strictly by style), but it is a great beer; like a clean beefed up pilsner. I'm usually not a big Industrial Arts fan, but they nailed it here.
