Nope ... they are better at both. Would love to hear what makes these schemes ridiculous.

First off, you can't be "better at both." I did not compare them to another brewery, so your statement doesn't make sense.

Regarding my comment that their marketing schemes are ridiculous, that's obviously my opinion, but I'm not the only one who thinks that way. Check the link:

    http://dsc.discovery.com/life/7-ridiculous-beer-marketing-ploys-that-probably-worked.html

Ancient recipes, musician collaborations, reality tv show, and an overall focus on "extreme" beers. DFH is like the pop star of craft beer, but someone should really tell them that the quality of beer is not directly proportional to the number of different adjuncts in it. It obviously works for them, but I think a lot of their marketing, branding and public image stuff is a bit silly. That's my opinion, which is shared by many other people who frequent this site. It's not "hate," it's a simple observation.

I do think a lot of their beers are really good (albeit overpriced.) I also think a lot of their beers were a disaster. And I don't think many of their beers could sell themselves, hence the need for the schemes. Brewers lately have this misplaced notion that barrel aging anything, sour anything, or crazy adjuncts will sell more beer, and it allows them to raise the price. The harsh reality is that often times, the beer isn't very good. I have the same criticism of other breweries, including ones I really like.

Seriously all, I'm one guy with some pretty mild opinions. Nobody here hates DFH (yet), or thinks that Sam is an idiot, or any of that. Rather than say things like "haterz gonna hate" or "wait till Sam gets here...", appreciate that some people just don't like pop music.

If you think DFH is adding ingredients to sell beers you're way off- they'd make a ton more money if they just stopped all the crazy beers and pumped out 60 min. all the time.

i don't think he's talking about volume, but more about the perception of 'premium' or 'standout' lines.

i doubt the combined volume of sour beer sold annually in the us matches the volume of sierra nevada pale ale.

The Beatles were a pop group, they did OK. Guess I should hate them, though. I will judge them solely on the merits of their popularity and not the quality of work. Good call.

With a slight tweak Mel Brooks summed this thread up pretty well.

Governor William J. Le Petomane: Holy underwear! Dogfish Head expanding! Innocent people potentially receiving delicious beer! We have to protect our phoney baloney opinions here, gentlemen! We must do something about this immediately! Immediately! Immediately! Harrumph! Harrumph! Harrumph!

BA's who like DFH better watch your ass and give them a Harrumph!

I can say that if it weren't for the Discovery Channel and DFH, I wouldn't even be making this post right now and I certainly wouldn't be brewing at home. If it weren't for 90 minute IPA (@ $10 a 4-pack) being in my local grocery store next to the Budweiser, I probably wouldn't be posting this now either. I'm glad they got big enough to be carried in my HUGE home-town grocer and if they continue to grow so everyone else can also enjoy an Olde School or punkin, good for them! Can I say honestly that every beer they brew is a home run? No. Sierra Nevada is literally carried in every convenient mart, gas station grocery store and every mix in between in AZ and I still LOVE me one of their pales and so do all my friends. Once the beer begins to suffer and or quality control becomes an issue, I welcome bitching. If you can't tell whether or not your brew came from a 10 bbl or 10k bbl batch, who cares?

Exactly...plus from what I understand, Sam doesn't want to become Anheuser-Busch, or even Sam Adams, for that matter. I'd say he cares about quality control, big-time.

Yes! Maybe then DFH can re-enter the market I live in. They were here for a brief period, but couldn't maintain it. A total tease. I developed a love of Burton Baton (almost as deep as my relationship with Founder's Red's Rye), which I have only since satisfied through mail orders that killed me on shipping costs.

DFH WorldWide Stout is one of my favorites of all-time and I have to buy it out of state due to the ABV. Wish they would make something like it but a bit lower in ABV.

Ive seen this.... quite a few times... at first it horrified me, then i threw it in with my cynical gaze at everything, now i think: fuck it...whatever people like..it takes time to decide what you want to do and be and how you will approach the world.

And how lucky we are to be able to even discuss ridiculous beer like 120 Min, much less decide how it must be consumed....most of the world will never have access to 15,000+ beers available in these times ...and even in the U.S. where i am lucky enough to live most living persons spend most of their lives i with FAR fewer choices. Fitting for this thread cause i love Dogfish Head very unabashedly even though, as they themselves admit, many crazier things have gone on in craft brewing since their early days. I won't count many of their beers among my favorites but their success has certainly helped many a smaller/newer brewer either through inspiration or the mere fact that "hey bro ya gotta try this 60 min stuff..." opening doors for drinkers which in turn expands the demand. I think anybody who drinks good beer int he 2000s/2010s owes Dogfish at least a little debt of gratitude.

I wish them well with the expansion.

If anyone thinks that dogfish making a beer that was last brewed TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO is "gimmicky," then you obviously hate science, and are a huge (insert extremely long list of derogatory words). HEY SAM, THANKS FOR PAYING TONS OF MONEY TO DO THE RESEARCH NECESSARY TO RESURRECT A STYLE OF BEER THAT HASN'T EXISTED IN THOUSANDS OF YEARS. REALLY COOL THAT I CAN DRINK SOMETHING LAST DRANK BY THE PEOPLE BUILDING THE PYRAMIDS, OR BY THE FRIGGIN' ROMAN EMPIRE. OH WAIT, YOU SHOULD JUST MAKE TRIPLE IPAS AND BARREL AGED SOURS INSTEAD, THEN YOU'D HAVE A HIGHER BA RATING.

In caps lock so all the hipsters wearing fake coke-bottle horn rims can read it.

Also, the Pangea beer is cool as sh*t, too. HEY SAM, THANKS FOR ALLOWING ME TO DRINK WATER FROM ANTARCTICA.

Dogfishhead has style thats why they are one if the top breweries. If you got a shit ton of people that like your style your going to get a shit ton of people that hate your style. Hendrix had his own style, sure technically he wasnt a master at singing or a master of guitar but the mother fucker had the heart. Keep making beer dog fish head cuz you got a heart for it
