Howdy everyone! Me and my friend are taking a short, three night road trip north from LA to Santa Cruz. We're spending one night in Monterrey, and a couple in Capitola/SC, around the 18th of June till the 20th.

The plan as of now is:

    - Fieldwork
    - Alvarado St
    - Sante, Sante, and more Sante.

For food, Campagnios in Monterrey is the only must, and we are considering Hidalgo's tacos right outside.

My question is, are there any other spots, bars/breweries/food that come highly recommended in the way or in either location?

I know Humble Sea is in SC, but I haven't been terribly impressed with their hoppy stuff. Their stouts are nice, though. Any bars with great taplists are welcome. I'm all ears.

In the Santa Cruz area, I don't think there's a must-visit brewery besides Sante. Humble Sea gets a lot of buzz, but I'm in a similar camp as you -- it's a nice local option but certainly not worth making a special visit.

Lupulo has a really diverse tap list. You'll find plenty of NorCal stuff on there, and also places beyond (e.g. Jester King, even the occasional Side Project). A good spot to grab Cellarmaker and other cans as well.

Beer Thirty has a good tap list as well, and gets some cans that Lupulo doesn't (e.g. Moonraker).

FYI, Sante in Capitola (the only one open for in-person consumption at the moment) allows you to bring food from the outside (well, at least they did pre-pandemic -- I'm assuming that's still true?). A really nice feature if you're going to camp out there.

So I'll focus on a few places nearby:

San Marcos Charquito is very close by with better-than-usual Mexican food. They make their own bread for tortas, for example.

Surf City Sandwiches is quite good.

My personal favorite in that area would be Village Host Pizza, which is unabashedly American style pizza (not thin crust, loaded with toppings) but they do a great job and it's not overly salty.

Kind of random that Campagno's is a must hit for you. Its legit sandwiches one makes at home all the time.

In downtown Santa Cruz is Taqueria Los Pericos, best Mexican food in town by far, very authentic Al Pastor (the best).

Vasilis on highway 1 basically on your way to humble sea for Greek grubs.

Burger. has a pretty solid taplist most of the time, there is one in Santa Cruz and Aptos. Im not too impressed with their food though.

Beer Thirty is a must stop, great vibe, solid taplist, and cans TOGO.

I like New Bohemian brewing. they do lots of lagers and different styles you don't usually see. Good BBQ too.

Is there any place in Santa Cruz that you'd recommend that also has good Margaritas? I used to swear by Tampicos till they went belly up, and the last time I went to El Palomar I was less than impressed. I've heard good things about Los Pericos, but I don't believe they have a liquor license, and I think at present they're still only doing take out/delivery.

We'll be in Santa Cruz the 12th thru the 16th this month.

At this point I've pretty much opted for pizza at Woodstock, as they seem to have a decent tap selection and I've heard good things about their pizza. My only concern is whether they can handle a fairly large group (they'll be 7 of us).

Any thoughts or suggestions? Outside of my wife, everyone in our group is fond of craft beer and pizza. My wife and everyone else in our group are fans of a good margarita (heavy on the anejo tequila please) and Mexican food.

The Mexican restaurant that best marries good food and cocktails is Copal (on Mission St), which opened this past year and specializes in Oaxacan cuisine. I haven't had their margarita, but I have tried other cocktails and they've been very good. Mole and other Oaxacan specialties are excellent.

Pizza and beer: my personal suggestion is to avoid Woodstock's at all costs. I think their pizza is abysmal. The best choice is to bring pizza to Sante. If you don't like that idea, then Mentone (whose owner is David Kinch of Manresa fame) may be your best bet if you like Neopolitan style pizza. They take their beverages seriously (especially wine and cocktails, but they usually have Sante IPAs in cans) and their food even more seriously. Surprisingly, I don't think there's a spot that excels in both. The other good pizza spots in town are Bantam (Neopolitan style) and Village Host (American style as mentioned above).

Thanks! This is helpful. I think we want to stick to the Santa Cruz area this time around, but will keep Mentone in mind. I'm familiar with Manresa of course, and the menu at Mentone looks impressive.

I'm sorry to hear such a bad review of Woodstock. The menu looks good, the reviews are generally positive, and the tap list is fairly impressive. So maybe we'll try Copal. That's actually closer to where we're staying anyway.

Quick question. I've looked over your pizza recommendations, and while everything looks very good, it occurs to me that your recommendations are a bit more high end than what we're probably looking for. For example, I'm perfectly content with the Upper Crust and Pizza my Heart. I realize neither place is going to win any awards for the quality of their pie, but I feel as if they're fine for a large group who are more interested in drinking good beer as opposed to eating a gourmet pie. Given those parameters, do you still feel that Woodstock is unpalatable?

I love Campagno's. LA has shittty, overpriced Deli.

I wouldn't call Village Host high end, but I agree Bantam and Mentone are in a different class.

To me, Pizza My Heart is far better than Woodstock's and Upper Crust. And you can get reasonably decent beer on tap at the downtown location. The main reason I didn't suggest it is because there are so many locations in the Bay Area.

If you want your pizza minds blown and you like the deep dish crust, here’s what you have to do... it will take some planning.
    1. Get Instagram (I know, I know)
    2. Look up Pizza Pals pizza
    3. Message them to order ahead of time.
    4. Pickup is only available at the SARA SC Portal Friday 3-7pm.
    * They tend to be sold out by Friday, so it does really take some planning. Looks like John might not be rolling in until Saturday though.

Sunday actually, so unfortunately this won't work for us. Is SARA portal even open yet for on premise imbibing? Some of the comments in this thread led me to believe they were still closed down, except for pick-up.

I moved out of Santa Cruz 5 years ago but back then our go to pizza place was Engfer Pizza Works for great pizza with a huge selection of quality can/bottled beers plus a few on tap. You may even be lucky and have a chance to play some ping pong.

Intriguing. When I moved from Santa Cruz some 40 years ago, the best pizza I ever had in my life (Glass house pizza) was right up the street from Engfer's. The pizza menu at Engfer's looks pretty impressive as well.

So, I was unable to change our groups mind about Woodstock, so that's where we ended up. As you had advised, the pizza was mediocre at best. Fortunately, the weather Monday evening was Santa Cruz perfect, customer service was outstanding (all the more so, considering the place was slammed), and the beer selection more than adequate (Alvarado St. Mai Tai ipa). So no one seemed to mind the mediocre pie (which at least came in good size portions).

Glad it worked out for your group. Mai Tai IPA on tap is certainly not the worst way to spend a warm evening outdoors!

Very true, but just wanted to say thank you for your advice. Some of your other suggestions, when it's just me and the wife, will be on our radar for future culinary excursions.
