Good point, that's just what he told me. Here's my math:

    53 gallons in a bourbon barrel x 128 (oz per gallon) x 8 barrels / 25.35oz (oz per 750ml bottle) = 2,141 bottles?

Let's say the barrels are ~10% evaporated due to the Angel's share so ~1,900 bottles. Then let's assume they needed to do some blending to get the right taste instead of using 25% across the board to achieve 100% yield.

Even if it's 26%, 26%, 24%, 24% they're looking at reducing the yield on several barrels (which could possibly be unblended, bottled and given to friends, etc.) Let's say the residual yield after blending is 85%, we're looking at ~1,600 bottles.

I'm sure several were held back for family, friends, investors, the Surly guys, Mikkeller, De Struise etc. I know we're not quite at 900, but it didn't seem all that unreasonable to me.

Also I'm not a brewer/blender so someone else may be able to have a better idea what type of yields you'd get with an 8 barrel blend. That's just what the guy told me.

That all depends. If you're blending to taste you could use all of one beer and a minute amount of another... that'd be an impossible thing to predict (eg: Firestone Walker's Anni. beers).

    Upwards of 2 bottles!
It's safe to say you're Baller-in' then, yes?

I was told there'd be no math.

Yep, that was my point. If the beer was 50% Dark Lord we're looking at only ~900 total bottles after the angels share and before any bottles were held back for friends, family, other brewers, etc.

I always thought the problem with the base beer Baller Stout was the whack job dry hop they did with the blend. I mean even if you did a 1:1:1:1 blend, it shouldn't have came out that bad considering they are all about the same style. It would have been better if they did to taste (less DL, more Darkness, less Struise, more Mikkeller) but I think the result that was that mess was due to the dry hop.

Now if those base beers weren't dry-hopped (which I assume they weren't) and then barrel aged and then blended, I can see the result being pretty damn good. Hence what I am hearing but again it could have been even better if they blended to taste.

Huh? This is literally the first I've ever heard it mentioned that Baller Stout was dry hopped... source?

I always assumed it was, where the heck else did that hop character come from? A couple folks at the party I thought confirmed it but that was a year and a few brain cells ago.

EDIT ---- A google search reveals I could be nutzo. I've seen no one else say that.

EDIT EDIT ---- Looks like it may have been from the darkness. I only had one darkness a year ago and i think it was a couple years old so I wasn't privy to the hoppiness.

I always assumed it came from the hoppy monster that was 2011 Darkness.

That puts you at 8 years old for the year hip-hop died (1995). God that sucks, you don't know what you missed!

8 barrels becoming 900-ish bottles (if true) would probably mean that they blended to taste, a significantly greater quantity of some of the beer than others. Like, if the Black Albert went to hell in the barrel, there might not be much in there. It could also mean that they kegged a bunch of it up to serve randomly, or at next DLD.

Either way, if it's good, that'd be a relief. I guess we'll know sooner or later...
