I have one simple beer rule for myself. Do you have any of your own?

For me it's simple. No J Wakefield. I was an OG Society member and I know how to hold a grudge.

Beer rule for me is quality over quantity. I will gladly buy one rusty nail over a case of dragons milk.

I agree. It would definitely be my preference. I also agree it would greatly limit my choices. I do however shop at 2 stores who have what might be referred to as “cool storage” (sub 65 or so) with no natural light entering the room. That chart that you have linked before has allowed me to understand it is possible to buy these beers and enjoy them at their full potential or close to it as long as they are somewhat fresh. So, like many rules, I guess that one in particular for me anyways, was meant to be broken.

I also have rules about drinking during the week, price limits, etc but those also get broken from time to time. I guess I don’t actually have any concrete “beer rules”.

By me there are tons and tons of cold stored IPA options. Sometimes to many. So I am fortunate in that regard. But it does bum me out when ever I do see an IPA on the warm shelf that I want and it's got a couple months on it. This is the case with Bells Two Hearted. I love that beer but it's never fresh enough or stored cold.

You are indeed fortunate. My local beer retailers do have multiple refrigerators but the majority of their beers are on shelves (or stacked on the floor). The 'challenge' is that for beers in the refrigerators (with the exception of Lawson's) as a consumer I have absolutely no idea how long those beers were in cold storage. That six-pack of IPA that I pick out of the refrigerator may have been placed there the day before and the previous x weeks they were in the back room in warm temperature conditions.
For your consideration Bell's Brewery uses a 6-month best by duration for Two Hearted. Maybe they are able to package these beers with extremely low TPO values? FWIW I am happy to buy Two Hearted off the shelf with just a couple/three months of age; I have never experienced problems here. Edit: needless to say but fresher is better.

    Cheers!

My beer rule is 'Don't spend the douchebag dollar' (meaning, 'don't give your dollars to douchebags'). It's Raggy's rule, circa 2006, I've just made it my own & expanded on it some.

Don't support people who don't clean their lines properly, in a timely manner, and/or at all, don't properly clean their glassware, don't rotate their beer, don't keep/store their product away from light and heat and properly chilled, price gouge, misrepresent code dating, treat their staff poorly, are vague about pricing, knowingly serve you old or otherwise bad condition beer, use cheater pints and don't call them the 14oz glasses that they are, intentionally short pour, mislabel or misrepresent product, don't take a beer off when they know it's off, pour faux cask, compromise the ability to taste & smell your beer, treat cask beer disrespectfully by serving it well beyond its short lifespan without a breather and even then... and the list goes on and on.

Too many good people out there struggling for me to be throwing away money on people with bad beer behaviors.

My rule is don't waste beer. Even if I find it is not be my liking I'll just drink it all and then have a different beer right after. When I read about people saying drain pour or dumping the rest of their 6 pack I just think that's wasteful. Maybe I've just been lucky not to have had a beer that bad or I just have a more diverse palate. Probably why I read reviews on this site before buying many of the beers I purchase. Can't be pouring money down the drain.

What really surprises me is when someone here posts that they are drinking a beer from a 4 pack... they decide that it's just OK, and then immediately pour the other 3 cans down the sink since it's just OK. If someone doesn't think the beer is bad, don't they think it's worth trying a second one on another day since impressions can vary on different days? Seems super impulsive.

I don't like formats < 0.5L/16.9oz. I'm ok with 440ml/14.9oz but 330ml/11.2oz is a joke! I will never understand why those formats even exist

So my rule: avoid beers in cans/bottles <0.5l/0.44l

Let me make sure I got this right - The people who don't acknowledge that we are at a beer apex are the pretentious ones? And your opinion on things isn't more valid than another's? Taken as a whole, it seems like an odd way to see things.

I’ll give it away before I waste it and have done so a few times. If I think it’s awful I’ll give the other 3 cans to 3 different friends. Or one can to a buddy and if he comes back the next day saying it was awesome, well it’s his lucky day because here’s 2 more.

That is the part I can't personally. If the beer in not offensive to you (i.e., tastes bad) why not just drink that beer. You already paid for it so why not drink it unless is is absolutely awful for you?

    Cheers!

I don’t have any absolute hard and fast rules but if you ever see me drinking a Miller Lite I’ve hit some tough times and things are not going well.

I have many. Off the top of my head.....

    -No beers with lactose/milk sugar

    -No beers with pastry

    -No beers with vanilla

    -No beers with fucking hazelnut

-No breweries who have sexist/racist/homophobic beer names/art. This isn't as much of a problem in 2021, as white straight male supremacists have learned to not express their bigotry at work and just post it with their friends on 8chan later. It was a bigger issue before.

    -No ABinbev

-No sugar, cinnamon or anything for that matter on the rim of my glass

    -No frosted mugs

-Always order draft beer over bottles/cans if you have the option

-Support brewers who do good shit in the community (my subjective definition of good shit in the community, of course).

There's probably many others. I'm a picky consumer. It's capitalism, so we vote with our dollars. If I buy some shit made by slaves in Bangladesh then that means I'm cool with slavery in Bangladesh. If I buy some shit from a company that pumps toxic chemicals into the air, then I'm cool with pumping toxic chemicals into the air. It's a shitty truth and hard to swallow. Side note, I'm fucking far from perfect, so spare me the "the internet connection you're using to access BA stabbed someone." My shit stinks like anyone else's. I'm trying to get there and it seems like trying to get there can make a big difference.

No BMC type swill (so no adjunct lagers). That being said, I agree with a lot of the other recommendations in this thread as well. I make it a habit not to buy beer that doesn't have a "best by" date (or where the date is long since past), and I'm selective about who I give my money to (with a nod to @slander's viewpoint). Where I live now, I rarely have to worry about purchasing unrefrigerated product (alas, this was a considerable problem when I lived in Baltimore), so no worries there. The first time I had a bottle of Black Tuesday, it was with 3 other guys and we still weren't able to finish the bottle. I can't even imagine trying to solo one (but agree, it sounds like a terrible idea).

I apparently don't dislike Dragon's Milk as much as @SFACRKnight does, but I completely agree with his sentiment. As I've gotten older my capacity has increasingly diminished, so it's really the only way I can operate any more. I'm always looking for ways to decrease my quantity intake, and so focusing on quality (over quantity) seems like a good way to accomplish that. The sentiment also goes hand in hand with Rule number one (no BMC swill).
