I digress, we're here for the beer. Working on this right now, it's a rock solid D-IPA but doesn't hold a match to the Tree House I just had. It is what is, but no complaints here!

    Prost! :nerd::beers: !!

A bit late to the party for me...

    Anyway...

Was at one of my favorite dive bars, Johnny's Gold Brick (I have to put in effort to get to a $20 tab at Johnny;s ). Had a $2 Old Fashioned before a Klaous Edelweizen...they try to make German styles in the Houston area. Though generally haven't been among my favorites.

Pours a cloudy/hazy yellow color. A white head forms with good retention. Light lace is left behind.
Aroma is doughy and toasted malts aroma up front and fairly dominate. A bit of the traditional banana and clove spice. With a mineral and almost sulfur like aroma going on. Which is not uncommon in a Hefe, but necessarily my favorite.
Taste again that toasted and doughy malt character. Banana and clove, with spicy phenolics. That mineral/sulfur character is here as well. Which is maybe a touch of DMS, but not enough to really interfere, but enough to notice.
A medium body, with crisp carbonation. That becomes fairly smooth. Easy enough to drink. I can come back to this when in the mood.

Not a bad Hefe at all, there is some mineral characteristics that might be some DMS, but I have also gotten that from other more well known examples of the style as well. Though, overall, its just kind of middle of the road. Especially for local, regional, and imports. Its pretty much down on that list. Not to say this is bad, in anyway, just not one I would reach for with many other excellent options available.

Overall score is 3.59, which is B for me.

Then went over to Hughes, a great beer bar and Vietnamese spot.

Saint Arnold Bourbon Barrel Aged Commitment.

Pours an opaque black color. A small tan head forms, which sticks throughout. Light lace is left behind.
A huge aroma. Big oak, vanilla and dark baked bread. Roasted malts, with coffee and chocolate. This is a really intense nose.
Like the nose, taste is all the barrel, oak, vanilla flavors are up front. Baked bread, with a toasted flavor going on. There is a substantial sweetness, but that doesn't get in the way of anything. Like dark chocolate, and even a bitterness lingering. Lots going on here, and it is all really well balanced. Even with the strong and warming alcohol presents.
A full, viscous body of coarse. Moderate carbonation. A bit of stickiness, which leads to a smooth body. Certainly a sipper, and the alcohol is apparent, but more warming and inviting that anything.

This is a huge Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, but one that I can enjoy. Normally I would say that Saint Arnold makes another balanced offering. While it is in that Saint Arnold "balanced" vain, in that nothing really asserts itself over anything else. Its also very intense, and drinks more like a Port IMO. A great sipper with lots going on.

Overall score is 4.06, which for me is A-

Also at Hughies, one of my all time favorite sandwiches. Grilled pork bahn mi, fried egg, pate, and egg roll, yeah this is my regular anywhere. With a 512 SMASH Mosaic IPA. Every bit as good as Yellow Rose, which is high praise from me.

Thin Man Bones In Traction barleywine. Has about 5 months on a shelf, which seemed to mellow the super hop bite. Spicy, almost apple brandyish.
