Any updates on the next release of MoaS from Pelican? Do they still ship cases, or do they only distribute locally?
Don't know but I'm interested in the answer. Wasn't familiar with this beer, but now I'd love to score some. I have had a few Pelican beers and quite enjoyed them.
Pelican's last email update said Mother will be available at their pubs on 11/19. They usually start showing up in distribution a week or two later. I don't believe Pelican ships cases, but if they do it would be only within Oregon (this is the rule for their Bird Day boxes).
They used to ship. Sort of...from a 2010 Portlandbeer.org blog: The Pelican will not be accepting online orders for this beer. Instead they will be accepting names and contact information via phone starting today October 7, 2010. To order, please call 503.965.7007. You will be asked to leave a message on the Mother of All Storms voicemail. On December 1, 2010, Pelican will evaluate its stock of the beer and should the numbers allow, they will proceed to contact the names on the reservation list on a first come, first serve basis to fulfill the orders. Pelican will begin shipping any orders the following Monday, December 6, 2010. This delay will allow Pelican to process payment and ensure that everyone can be contacted prior to shipment. If you have attempted to submit an online order, please call to get your name on the reservation list. Unfortunately, online orders will not be processed. I bought a case for 240 bucks back then and had it sent to California, but it has been a while. Thinking about trading for one this year because I sure enjoyed it in 2010/11.
This seems pretty consistent with previous releases. I generally seem to recall the beer coming out around Thanksgiving in the past. The last few years it's been more difficult to find this beer around town. Saw bottles at Belmont Station and John's last year, but no place else. (was looking around on behalf of a trading partner)
I think 2010 was the one year I also bought a case. I ended up giving quite a few as gifts because a case of MOAS is...a lot of MOAS. Kind of wish I had kept a couple more since it ages so well. Oh! One other note on this year's version: 500ml bottles. Pelican did away with 22oz bottles of their BA beers this year, so MOAS, Captain of the Coast, and Father of All Tsunamis are now all 500ml. I'm curious to see how much the price will go down...or if it will.
MOAS is reliably the best beer Pelican makes (Father of Tsunamis is also excellent). if you know anybody in the PNW (or maybe even N Cali), its usually pretty available and not overly hard to find
There was a BA @matttttYCE that lived in the PHX area (that has not been seen for 8 years) that bought a case in 2011 in which i bought 3 bombers for $20 each from him. Made a journey to Pelican while vacationing in OR in 2010 . Very cool location. Anyway, damn good beer and would love to have it again! Cheers, Tom
Loved this beer, have had verticals, and use to buy a case or half case years back. Use to buy a bottle every year when I use to cellar beer, man, how things change... Actually went onsite in 2012, just a amazing place, well worth a visit. Good food, views are post card...I mean social media worthy.
I used to see in the SF Bay Area about 5-7 years ago, but I haven't seen it since. Unfortunately, COVID screwed up distribution for non-California beers and the selection is far less (plus it's not an IPA). On my list to visit the brewery (probably when I retire in a couple of years).
The prices I've seen around Portland for 2021 MOAS is $19-20 for the 16.9oz bottle. $20 at the pubs on the coast.
