Agreed. I bought a lifetime membership at Machine House the year they opened.

And Porter in Redmond and Three Cranes (née Brewer's Union). Make cask relevant again.

Oh, and Ale Apothecary has a beer engine in the tasting room and produces their own casks. I had a cask Bitter (w/ kveik yeast) yesterday while picking up competition entries.

What about that place up in the mountains outside Eugene, Brewers Union, or something like that, are they still around?

Looks like the place is now called 3 Legged Crane Pub and Brewhouse.

I always thought their cask was terrible. Sorry. They used to send a cask up to Santiams cask festival. Rock The Cask Bar.
    Always very poor.
    That fest is gone now..Covid.

That's just sad. I remember reading about them a good 10 years back

Did you ever have a chance to visit? When I lived in Eugene, it was a fairly easy drive getting over there. It was an interesting place, as they'd typically have 8 or 9 different beers on cask. Many of them were not all that great IMHO, but I could usually find a couple of things I would like. The porter and bitter versions were usually pretty decent.

I don't recall anything I had that was superior to some of the cask ales I had across the pond... Or English cask ales I've had here in the States (a Young's cask ramrod ale I had years ago still stands out). That's a pretty high bar I think

Went once years ago. Maybe didnt try the right ones. But i was never impressed by the beer they sent to the festival. Breweries that didnt do cask usually had better entries.

Hair of the Dog will be closing sometime this summer, Alan is going to be retiring and he doesn't plan on selling. He posted a video on the HotD Facebook group this morning.

I saw that. Very bummed out, but not really surprised. Ran into Wendy a few times and it sounded like Alan was "winding down". Add to that the reduced hours of operation and his son not wanting to take over / learn the craft and here we are.

i will definitely have to stock up on a ton of Adam and Fred before they close for good.

HotD will definitely be missed. A unique brewery that makes unique beers

I am beyond sad to hear this, although happy for Alan. There are thousands of breweries out there and HotD is the only one I have no idea how to replace. Nobody else makes beers quite like them, and absolutely nobody else makes non-sour beers I actually think get better even after 3+ years of age.

I had heard similar comments about him wanting to retire, but was under the impression that he was going to sell the brewery/brand. I don't know what his financial situation is, but based on what I heard, was under the impression that he planned to use the sale of the brewery to help finance his retirement plans.

I'm not being superlative when I say Adam is my most favorite beer brewed in the city of Portland, yet it's not one I buy enough because I can always get it. I will need to stock up. All that aside, kudos to Alan for retirement and being able to make this decision on his own.

Maybe he will sell the brewery, but Hair of the Dog IP/recipes will not be sold?
