??? You have some reason to think it isn't the Evan William barrels any more (which is what the BA site states). The site only references the type of barrel for the first two vintages of MOAS/Perfect storm. After that, the brewery site simply notes that the beer is aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels (which would seem to indicate they're still using the same EW barrels, though I suppose they might have switched to some other type of bourbon barrel). Changing barrel types would, I would think, change the flavor profile of the beer pretty significantly (judging from the BA Eclpse stouts I've had), and it's hard for me to imagine Pelican messing with a good thing (a proven winner). I suppose at some point they would need to replace/retire the barrels they currently use, but even so, I would be surprised if they started using something different than Evan William barrels (unless for some reason they weren't available any longer).

So while I'm not completely certain that recent MOAS vintages are still aged in EW barrels, I have to think it's very, very likely. You could always contact the brewery if you want more certainty than that. I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you. :-)

Actually, I wondered about this too, since it just says "kentucky bourbon barrels" and nothing more specific than that.

A little hunting on their web site showed this pic from last year's barreling, which is apparently a Heaven Hill 5 distillery barrel, and not Evan Williams. Can't be sure they used the same distillery barrels this year, but this at least gives you a more recent reference.

Thanks for that. I tried to find information on that yesterday, but had trouble. Whats confusing is that I'd think the barrel would say Evan Williams on it, not Heaven Hill 5 (which is a specific brand, I think, of 5 year old Heaven Hill bourbon). Beer's good, so I guess it doesnt matter, but they don't make it easy to find out the information.

Yeah I am not sure how they mark their barrels, I would imagine breweries in some instances get whatever barrels are available at the specific time.

I think what we really want to know is how well the Sharpie ink notes come through in this year's batch.
