Haha, assuming it's calling itself a Pilsner...I think a fair amount of New England IPAs are using Pilsner malts these days.

It is not just a New England thing. It seem that when it comes to IPAs these days that lighter in color is 'better' and Pilsner Malt helps achieve that goal.

But just because a beer is brewed using Pilsner Malt does not make that beer a Pilsner style beer, but I am confident you already knew that.

    Cheers!

There's definitely a lot more to that style than just using Pils malt. For example, do I think Pacifico is a Pilsner? No, not really. But if it's going to call itself that, I personally would like the beer to at least use Pils malt, even if it doesn't fit my personal definition of a Pilsner.

May be a smaller tasting for me @sulldaddy but here’s what I’m working with…

Longliner has been my most purchased beer over the past year and a half. It’s interesting cause they just call it a lager, I’m guessing for the masses and marketing. It’s about as perfect as a German Pils can get. Looking forward to spreading the love.

It's going to be hot here this weekend, and I'll be tasting a lot of pilsners, but they'll all be Scrimshaws.

Wanted to share this cool beer graphic from Em Sauter at Pints and Panels. She does a lot of great beer education via cartoon art and is a big supporter of craft beer and generally a great person.

She gave me permission to share the graphics with y'all for the Pils tasting, but you can also check out all sorts of other great info here : https://www.pintsandpanels.com/

Anyway, check out this for info to compare German Pils Vs Czech Premium Pale ("Pilsner")

Enjoy! And get ready for some crisp golden beers this weekend!!

Ask and ye shall receive. I was in Chicago yesterday for work and swung up north a bit to Elk Grove Village to visit Mikerphone before heading east towards home - and stopping by Transient in Bridgman MI on the way to pick up a couple of pilsners (and some big stouts because that’s what they do at Transient).

See everyone tomorrow with at least one of these. Can. Not. Wait.

Drove through Yardley today so picked up a 4 pack of Pilsner from Vault Brewing. From the brewer's description:

"TELLER PILSNER A balanced and approachable Pilsner. Brewed simply with Pilsner malt, German and American style noble hops, & Yardley water. Straightforward and direct"

The original Classic American Pilsners used domestic 6-row malt instead of Pilsner malt; but the hopping levels were squarely in the Pilsner range. That's a reason why I tend to look more towards hopping when considering the overarching style characteristics.

Some modern interpretations will actually favor Pilsner malt instead of 6-row, though, and I happen to have one handy for the tasting :sunglasses:

I'm guessing that is more in comparison to their other beers. They are a brewpub, so it probably is Vault's "my friend that came along with me for dinner normally drinks Budweiser" option.

It's to appeal to HazeBois who think pilsners are for old people

Sure, I get that sentiment. But for me and my palate that Pils malt hit is a big part of what makes a Pils a Pils. And of course, the Noble hops being prominent.

When I see something that uses 6-row as you mention, but has the same hop level of a Pils, I think more IPL. Of course, at this point one might say the modern American Pilsner (whether it uses 6-row or Pils malt) is an IPL.

Considering the New England IPA was arguably started around 2013, ten years later those HazeBois are probably HazeMen. And I bet they’ve moved on to Pilsners by now…

Especially considering the originators like Trillium and Tree House (especially Tree House) brew a litany of lagers and older world styles.
