I mean, what is the last derivation with a 4.5 rating? Maybe people put too much weight into it, but I’ll admit reviews have me nervous to open mine lol

    Seems like consensus to me.

I would love to get a more complete conversation about this beer. I'm not sure how deep they got during the livestream.

I'm the biggest SP fanboy there is....if you gave me Derivation GC blind, without any context I would have told you it was infected or the glass was dirty.

I would just honestly love to know if the fresh Amburana barrels have that much of a polarizing affect on people's taste buds, thinking like how some people love cilantro and some think it tastes like soap....is there bottle variability??

I just don't understand. I love cinnamon, i loved '24 MJK, I just honestly don't understand how this beer could taste so bad to me and and many others while some people said it was the best beer of the week.

I've thought about this in much the same capacity - I thought DGC was...dare i say...offputting. But I'm glad to get another bottle to try to see if it still holds. I did have it back to back with D17, which I thought was one of the better beers I had all of stout week. But Grand Cru was probably the worst (read: least enjoyable to me).

I'm hoping DGC turns out like Orviamo B2 did for me. Thought I was gonna hate that beer based on some of the comments about it but ended up drinking the whole bottle and loving it

Guys, even the best breweries will sometimes drop a turd. Sounds like it's the amburana. What's done is done and hopefully they don't incorporate that into any more blends :grinning:

Because when Cory finds something he likes, he only uses it once.

    $70 turd?

also it sounds like they want to use Amburana even more now. They’ve used it with their whiskey already as well. Cory loves cinnamon

I like cinnoman too but I’ve found anything I’ve had from amburana barrels to be off putting as well :/. Parabola and 10fidy come to mind immediately. Hoping I enjoy this one more

I definitely don't view it as a turd. I think the @davidtarnow comparison is a good one re: cilantro was a good one - I know several people I was with that really enjoyed it.

Just curious, but did anyone have Derivation GC alone or with a relatively fresh palate during stout week? With all the stouts released during the week, one could imagine some palate fatigue affecting its taste

While Amburana Parabola didn't do much for me, I thought Los Lenadores from them was excellent. It was the first time I ever had anything aged on amburana actually. Triptych (local brewery by me) recently did a BA barleywine that involved amburana and had coffee. I was not in love with the idea on paper, but it is a superb beer. Dread & Breakfast also had an amburana aged thread. Love that one too.

I did and loved it. I also love RD One’s Amburana finished whiskey and I love cinnamon. I bought 3 bottles of Grand Cru.

I can see where it might not be for everyone though

You guys can keep the amburana stouts, I just want LC to be able to buy cases of Content Moderator, Adjudicator, Oma, and Gretel.

I don’t think you need to be in LC to be able to do that

man...those stovepipe BA TenFidy cans were so good back in the day. One of the first beers to get me into BA stouts

Somehow discussing untappd and a beer having a 4.6 rating spiraled into calling it a turd.

It’s a good beer. If the bourbon profile was dialed up more like MJK 24 to balance out the amburana it would have been much better. I found it to be kind of one dimensional and unbalanced by the amburana which made drinking a whole bottle a bit of a chore. I personally got almost no vanilla from it.

We all know Untappd ratings are crap. People rate shit high for all kinds of dumb reasons, but if you look, you'll find honest responses in the comments. And those honest comments lean towards the barrels not working in the beer. No one wants to admit that a $70 beer isn't worth the price.

Untappd is like Chatroulette. ‘If you want some quality friends, you gotta wade through all the dicks first.’
