This comment makes me crack up:

"This is possibly one of the most innovative stouts out right now…might not be appreciated at this time…"

That's a really weird way of saying that this person understands the backlash, but yet, they gave it a 4.75/5

    Or this one:

"So unique. Bandaid. Very medicinal. But good."

That person gave it a 4.5/5

    This one is great too:

"A little bit of cinnamon and vanilla and booty (playdoh)"

    4.5/5

Gotta be thoughtful with the booty (playdoh) adjuncting.

I think part of the problem was when you name a beer Grand Cru Derivation, there is so much hype building up to it being amazing , and then it was fine 4/10 and people shit on it. Its a good beer, just probably should not have been Grand Cru.

The concept of Grand Cru is simply a blend of older or various vintages. It doesn't necessarily mean amazing or better than all past iterations.

Some blends at some breweries are certainly better than the sum of their parts because certain attributes in one beer can fill in holes or cover up flaws that the individual components of another may have had on its own.

SP already blends a lot of barrel work as I understand it to begin with, so to expect some revelation beyond what they already do is probably excessive. Not to mention, back to an old drum I often beat, beer, like all things in all aspects of life, can only be so good. There is a ceiling to the human experience. Sure, it's pliable, and our capabilities and resources change, but to constantly expect a more and more orgasmic experience out of something is a dangerous, often futile and even fatal pursuit.

Lulz , every Derivation is a blend. From the member email itself , this is supposed to be something special .
"I had never planned on having a Derivation Grand Cru, but a blend of double and triple barrel aged Derivation finished in Amburana Oak with Ugandan Vanilla sure felt like the right time to use the name . "

And does it escape you that a blend of blends is the point? Cory's been around the old world beer block a few times, pretty sure he didn't accidentally use the term Grand Cru. But hey, who am I to ascribe intent to him?

I don't see the marketing fluff outline where it's de facto better. Of course blending stock is special. A grand cru, by definition, encompasses a lot of time and work. But, in many cases, it too consists of cask aged beer that otherwise has been sitting around without a specifically defined end goal in mind.

I’m very surprised they’re still available; at least that made it very easy to also get a ticket for my wife.

I tried the draft pour at the patio and then a can when I got home. Feel like the bases are quite different between the two. Draft pour was fantastic. Can was good but not great.

they pretty much have to be. all draft versions are 15% but the cans are 10%… the description for the cans makes me think they blended it with like a 7 or 8% stout to drop the overall abv to 10 but who knows.
