Understood. What threw me off was your mention of the “Beers of Fame”—which made me think you were talking about the various top beer lists and not ratings/reviews (though the latter numerically influence the former).

As for price variation, it’s also understood that if you are buying a given beer on tap at a bar the price will be different from the price of the same beer out of a can or bottle—although ironically, in most restaurants the price of a bottled/canned beer is usually higher than the price of a beer on tap. But I think customers already know this and understand that when they order a beer at a bar they are also paying to keep the lights on in the joint, staff pay, insurance, property costs, etc. So if they think all they are paying for is literally the beer in the glass, they are grossly misunderstanding how bars work.

But setting all that aside, I see your point and that’s why I’m focusing on relative value and not cost—at that same bar is Bud Light also marked up 3x or just Heady? If it’s an across-the-board markup, then you would just factor that knowledge into your assessment of the value of the beer, knowing that you could also get a can of Heady for $3 but chose to drink it at a bar instead because, for whatever reason, you like to overpay for beer at public drinking establishments.

I would like to see a spot that shows the price paid just for comparison. For me it helps to understand what that beer costs if I am in that area. I also like to see what others are paying vs what my cost is local. If I buy Heady at the source it’s a good value when you remove all the travel expense and time. When I pay $18 at home it’s still a good value to me as I did not travel for it.

    Enjoy

This sheds light on why many of the Long-Timers are vehemently opposed, this is an example of tribal knowledge. New members might read the How to Review page (where it doesn't mention including price) but will not read the post from 10+ years ago that says "No". Updating the How to Review page would likely be a huge pain in the ass for little return.

I would like to point out that the thread from 2013 also begins with the word Should.

This is the second mention of the How to Review page—where even is that? I just searched all the main areas of the site and didn’t find it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it. Why wouldn’t it be on FAQ/Help?

EXCELLENT FIND! That information could have saved a lot of time, effort, and electrons on this and recent related discussions. Can't say I agree with it, but it does seem to set the standard for numeric ratings, even for "Overall" so I will abide by that in the future. I still say some clarification in the "How to Review Beer" section would be helpful, especially for new members.

There's definitely something to be said for value, although it can be really tough to quantify with some items. Especially with import/retail markups, gray markets, and even knowing what a beer is being compared to. Beer ratings already kinda entrust that the reviewer has some idea of what they're drinking, so it's not too wild of an idea though. I'd be down for it.
The BA "Places" reviews have a category for "Selection" and people score spots with 1-2 options 4s and 5s left and right with no context whatsoever. At a certain point you have to read through a bunch of reviews to piece things together, and value could be one of those things.

As others have noted, value is too subjective, but an option to list the cost per ounce for draft, vs bottle or can might be useful and put some pressure on those who consistently over charge for their brews.

I don't consider price in my rating. It's not a factor in the liquid. If there is a significant gap in perceived quality vs. price (positive or negative), I may note as much in the text review. But, again, I would not factor it in my numerical score.

One thing I noticed, and thought was interesting, is that he (@Todd ) didn't close down the thread (which he easily could have done). Pretty clearly he doesn't have a problem with us discussing your idea, and perhaps coming up with some additional thoughts he can use sometime down the road.

Maybe. Or maybe he wants a thread every decade or so to remind people why it’s not such a great idea—this one has a poll, too, so we have stats showing that the proposal has been overwhelmingly defeated by the community. Just based on the responses here, I’m convinced it probably wouldn’t work anyway (even as a choice you could opt in to), if only because so many people seem to conflate cost/price with value. Let alone most folks just seem naturally resistant to the concept.

I like my $30/500ml Mortalis BA stouts. They are in no way an economical value. It’s all subjective and relative, just like any other rating criterion. A four pack of DFH WWS/120 Minute IPA BA Utopias is a better “value” at $10/bottle. $0.02

I definitely think of price as part of the beer. I expect my favorite local 10% ABV BA stout at $30/16.9 oz or $1.78/oz to be comprehensively “better” than some other lower per-ounce drink. Is that $1.78 / oz a better value than the $0.83/oz I could have spent on a 4 pack of DFH WWS BA Utopias at 18%? Probably not. They’re both delicious, but one clearly gives me more deliciousness for my money. It’s all just opinion, and we all know the saying about opinions. The value of ratings in general for me is that once I lock in / agree with certain raters’ scoring, I can use their reviews as a litmus test whether I might enjoy something they’ve tried that I haven’t.

By the time that I drink a 'special' beer from my cellar and don't like it, whether I paid $22, $28, $36 for it is usually long forgotten. If I'm disappointed in the beer that cost me those extra bucks, I'm not any more disappointed if it was the $36 bottle or the $22 bottle. I'm just disappointed, period. Value is meaningless.
