When I read this thread's title I thought it was going to be about being served a beer in a tavern without a glass -- then suffering heavy consternation from the bar tender's reaction at finding a snob at his counter.

Yeah, been in that situation a few times in the past.

They didn't provide you with Saison Dupont in the big green bottles!?!

    Cheers!

    ...much ado about nothing...

...a good host will try to accommodate most reasonable requests when practical...a glass for a beverage - beer, water, cola, juice, etc. - doesn't seem like an imposition nor asking for such as being rude or boorish...it seems like the WaPo article's subject requester and host were fine with everything...it was that third-party nitwit that had an issue that didn't really concern her (other than her self-perceived fragile social standing)...:sunglasses:

Is it snobbish to ask for a red solo cup to decant my PBR before pouring it into a snifter?

It matters what style beer and where. If I'm at a dive bar and order a Spotted Cow, I'll drink it out of a bottle. If I'm at a party, I'll drink out of a bottle. I won't drink a Weissbier out of a bottle, but most dive bars or parties don't serve a Weissbier.

Definitely and when I was talking Belgian ale I was making a too generic point, I mean I can drink lighter, easy to sip on Leffe or Affligem blondes from the bottles, but if we’re going to talk Chimay especially their Grande réserve one I’d gently ask for a glass, too.

Asking is never rude. Demanding; well, that's another story.

I was in a restaurant last week and was served a Founders Porter in the bottle. I asked for a glass and was brought a frosted shaker pint glass.:confused::grimacing::angry:

Did you make a JK request and ask them to run hot water into that glass to warm it up?

    Cheers!

You are correct, as long as it's not a pool party. I'd just not be too picky about the glass style (host will prefer dishwasher safe). I've drunk beer out of water glasses, rocks glasses, highball glasses, and occasionally even fruit jars, with good results.

No, I just let it sit for a minute or so to allow it to warm up and the condensation to drain. So I drank from the bottle while waiting.

Our local from many years back learned about our penchant for non-chilled glasses for our Guinness over time and always had some set aside on Fridays.

This was my reaction as well. In fact, the thought crossed my mind that if the wife really thought her husband's request was "dreadfully rude," perhaps there might be some other issues the two of them need to address and work out.

The times I've hosted parties I've always provided plenty of glassware. If a guest wasn't provided one with his beer, it was likely an oversight on my part, and I would express my appreciation that he brought it to my attention. If I happened not to have glassware available, I'd apologize to my guest, regretfully inform him that I was out of glassware presently, and move on. It's not something that would bother me in the least.

I'm going to go out on a limb and surmise that this would be the reaction most people would have.
