GL reentered the NY and western New England at least according to GL's website. GL identifies an inconvenient smattering of locations for Edmund Fitzgerald in my region. This east coast resident (but west coast 28 years) likes the lower alcohol content (does 6% really qualify as low?) beers.

Absolutely. Anything under 8% is low abv.
6% might as well be 3% to this BA

I'd like to join, but, dumb ass here didn't order it, and we're totally out at work.

I feel stupid for not thinking about it and the 50th anniversary.

Was just at the store and saw a sixer of eddy fitz. I passed, as I have some porters at home that need drinking. Would’ve picked it up had I known of this tasting. Perhaps I’ll go back….

The only place in CT that MIGHT have it is if you are close to Norwalk, check the Wegmans there. I saw GL Oktoberfest there back in early September, so guessing they might have Eddy Fitz?

Happy Eddy Fitz Sunday - Monday - welcome to the tasting thread for this iconic Great Lakes beer, to honor the 50th Anniversary of the sinking of the Edmunc Fitzgerald!!

Please post your beer here and tasting notes and perhaps how you long you have enjoyed this great beer!

I will be back with my first sip of this robust porter, in a bit!!

Until then, remember those brave sailors who left port on this day on November 9th, unaware of the dangers that lay ahead for ship and crew!

    Raise your Eddy Fitz!! Cheers!

It seems fitting that we have a winter storm watch out here tonight and Monday, as the weather when the Fitz left port in MN was decent on November 9th 1975, but quickly turned really bad with howling winds and monsterous waves in the deep open waters of Lake Superior.....

Raising my glass to the intrepid crew of the Fitz, with my first taste of this great honorary beer, from Great Lakes Brewing in Cleveland....notes of smoke, chocolate, toffee and burnt sugar, all combine with the great hop contrast, as the beer warms a bit after the first few sips....a complex robust porter indeed! The 6% abv is not at all noticeable, and goes down smoothly....

Celebrate this 50th anniversary in whatever ways seems fitting - and enjoy a delicious beer in the process - tell us about your Eddy Fitz experiences!

    Cheers!

Someone needs to rewrite the lyrics to The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald to be about the eponymous beer.

I saw the scheduled tasting and was surprised to see I had not reviewed Edmund Fitzgerald. Fixed.

Looks like the weather is turning to match the season and a porter fits in perfectly.
    ...and from the new notes:
Dark, lightless body supporting a 1" proud head of cream colored mixed bubbles.

Aromas including roasted malts, cocoa and coffee bean all come through the spiced hop.

Flavor matches, but the hops are much stronger in taste than smell, maybe too much, but still plenty of roasted malts.

Tell us about your GLEF experience and thanks to @BeerVikingSailor for hosting.

I was born & raised in Cleveland in the 60's. The Edmund Fitzgerald was launched in my birthday year. My dad worked for the Chenango Iron Ore Co. as a ship traffic controller from an office overlooking the Port of Cleveland. He would often take us down to the ore docks to watch the taconite iron pellets being unloaded after arriving from the Minnesota mines. We even got to dine in the captain's private dining room once aboard their flagship freighter Chenango.
After a divorce & remarriages, we moved to VT and my dad moved to LI. The wreck happened in my junior year of HS in VT, and my dad was devastated. I still mark that day as gloomy November closes in, and cry every time I hear Gordon Lighfoot's rendition. Yesterday I toasted the 29 lost with a local imperial stout, but I hear Cleveland now has some great breweries. Cheers to the Mariners of the Great Lakes, brave ones all!

Great remembrances.....thanks so much for sharing!

I was also born the same year the ship was launched in 1958!

And yes, Cleveland has had some superlative craft breweries - esp. Great Lakes and their iconic Eddy Fitz porter! Cheers!
