American astronauts are prohibited from drinking alcohol in space, and there is the rumor of Buzz Aldrin taking communion on the moon (which I guess technically doesn’t break the rule). Russian/soviet cosmonauts on the other hand….are known to be a bit more liberal in consumption.
The ‘issue’ of beer in space is the physics of carbonation in a weightless environment: “Carbonated drinks are generally avoided in space due to microgravity preventing carbon dioxide bubbles from rising, resulting in "wet burps" (expelling liquid), stomach discomfort, and excessive foam. While Coca-Cola and Pepsi tested specialized cans in the 1980s, the drinks proved unpopular and technically challenging, causing messy, hyper-carbonated, and unpleasant consumption. Key Issues with Carbonated Drinks in Space: No Separation of Gas: Without gravity, bubbles stay trapped within the liquid, making the drink foamy and forcing astronauts to consume more gas than on Earth. Unpleasant Digestion: Gas does not rise in the stomach to be burped out, causing discomfort and painful, "wet burps". Mess and Packaging: Carbonation requires pressurized containers to prevent leaking, which are difficult to manage in microgravity. Experimental History: Coca-Cola and Pepsi competed to bring soda into space in the 1980s, but it was largely a marketing stunt with minimal practical success” Cheers!
Darn-it if AI hasn't been useful this week! Types of Space Beer Space-Travelled Ingredients: In 2015, Ninkasi Brewing launched yeast into space to create "Ground Control," an Imperial Stout. Similarly, a Japanese brewery released "Space Barley" in 2006, brewed from barley grown on the International Space Station. Brewed in Space: Starbase Brewing in Texas claims to have created the first-ever beer in space on the International Space Station in 2025 to study fermentation in microgravity. Designed for Space: Vostok Space Beer was specifically developed by 4 Pines Beer and Saber Astronautics to be drinkable in low-gravity environments, where traditional carbonation causes issues. Space-Themed Craft Beers: Many breweries use the theme for marketing, such as: Space Dust IPA by Elysian Brewing Co.. Space Race Hazy IPA by Salt City Brewing. Half Acre Space IPA.
The marketing has nothing to do with outer space. The can imagery has a picture of a friend who passed away.
Gets you a like for being creative, only issue I have with your post is uhh, what? I’d have loved you elaborate this a bit maybe. Neil Armstrong maybe had a beer before his steps for humanity? I don’t have a clue…
That must have been Blue Moon. Until one of our "beer historians" rightly correct me this wasn’t yet brewed.
