AV is the reason Fremont Summer Ale is no longer called Fremont Summer Solstice Ale. AV sent them a cease and desist letter, despite the fact that EVERYONE knows the Fremont beer is named after the world-renowned Summer Solstice Parade in the Center of the Universe.

I don't understand the selective animus by some brewers. Doing a random search of beer names reveals several beers of the exact same name by different brewers with no problems. Go figure. Oh well, AV should know not to mess with the power of the Universe. It will catch up to them.

Come to think of it, didn't Ravenswood get into it with Black Raven? As if anyone could ever be confused by Ravenswood the wine with Black Raven beers. Pretty ridiculous. Whatever became of that?

Let alone that there are 2 breweries (at least) with the same name. One is actually located in an alpine setting, the other in a town called Alpine, in Socal. They seem to be playing well together.

I'm sorry you were exposed to #9. Shower in Heady Topper immediately.

And that is far from MH's worst beer. I had a couple of their 'IPA's' last year and the diacetyl was stronger than the hop aroma. Sad, because they were good 10-12 years ago.

Very sorry to say that in my experience, this is a completely accurate statement.

Apparently Four Peaks in Arizona is barred from WA because they have a beer called Kilt Lifter. They can't just release their other beers and leave that one at home, nope, Pike has them blocked completely. Hop Knot is pretty good IPA, too.

So you're saying an agency charged with protecting the public interest is primarily concerned with doing the bidding of a particular company? Is there a regulation specifically forbidding an out of state brewer from having the same name for a brew as a local brewer? Interesting.

Don't know the exact details, that's just what one of the guys at 99 Bottles told me on Untappd the other day.

On a somewhat related topic, it's always puzzled me a bit, just how rabid some brewers/owners become over what they perceive to be a proprietary interest in the name of their beer (while others don't seem to be the least bit bothered by this). I remember when Lagunitas came out with their 9, which if memory serves, was made to commemorate their 9th anniversity. Anyway, this was back when Lagunitas was into writing fairly lengthy, whimsical musings on the side of their bottles. They indicated on bottles of 9 (subsequently called 10) that unfortunately they felt compelled to change the name of the beer, after receiving a phone call from a very upset, emotionally distraught, brewery representative from some place back East (which they didn't name on the bottle). They noted that the individual seemed like a very nice guy otherwise, albeit he apparently suggested he planned to sue Lagunitas for copyright infringement (or something to that effect) if they continued to call their beer 9. Lagunitas mentioned, I believe, that their own attorneys had suggested that the rep back East was a windbag, that Lagunitas had nothing to fear if they continued to call their beer 9. Nevertheless, in the interest of maintaining harmony and not unnecessarrily upsetting this brewery rep, they indicated that they were going to change the name of their beer.

Mind you, this was long before Lagunitas beers became available anywhere back East, and long before the um, ahem, brewery back east started selling their beers to lucky recipients here on the West Coast.

Thanks John. Very interesting narrative. Makes me wonder if the BA community at large has any influence over douche baggery behavior or if the fact their beer is so pedestrian it will fly under the radar anyway.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd guess the latter. I'm assuming the merger with Pyramid helped them out somewhat, opening up new markets, but the fact is, their beer is just not very good (and hasn't been for a while now). There also doesn't seem to be a lot of innovation or creativity there either. Pretty much everyone and their brother is making a barrel aged something, a sour something, or a brett infused something these days... but magic hat seemed to be practically the last one to come to the party, and their efforts so far have been anything but impressive (I used to try some of their sours and barrel aged beers in Baltimore, but the one's I tried were all so lame, I've pretty much stopped even buying sampler glasses of the stuff.) They do manage to keep the price down on their beers, which I assume is the only reason they're still around at this point.

I just read the following on facebook from my local Total Wine:

"Jeff from our Spokane store has exciting news:
Coming soon to the Brewery District: Magic Hat No. 9!"

Looked it up on BA and saw the "meh" reviews and then did a forum search and found this. Not sure why all the hype for this beer on tap, but not a peep about Abyss when it was on tap at the same TW.

Simple. Abyss doesn't need hype MH9 does. Avoid like the plague.
