I recently thought about this and was wondering what all of your views on this are. I thought the point of trading was to get non localized beers to consume and not just trade away for something else that you want. I would feel like I was being taken advantage of or something. I mean if I'm trading something to someone, im trading it thinking they really want it to drink not to just send away. It just doesn't seem right to me. What is everyone's thoughts on this?

In my opinion, the point of trading IS to get non localized beers to consume. But certainly not consume immediately. If someone trades x for y, and then trades y for z, he is still trading beer for something he could not get. Don't feel taken advantage of as long as you were happy with your trade.

Yeah I probably wouldn't feel that way unless I really hooked someone up, like sent a small brewery-only release for off the shelf locals, under the impression that they really wanted to try the beer I sent. But I would generally only do something like that with an established trading partner, where trading up wouldn't usually be much of a concern.

Sometimes you trade for something then come across the chance to try it somewhere else. Then you can retrade for something you havent had and retrade.

No offense OP, but this has been discussed many times. I'll cut to the chase:

    A. No, I'd never trade a rarity I traded for. That's stupid. Y'all who disagree are stupid.
    B. Yes, it's my beer. Once I trade for it, I own it. Y'all who disagree are commies (or socialists).
    C. Who cares, long as both original traders are happy. Y'all who disagree lose the Internets.

This thread will probably go on for 47 hours & encompass nothing not noted above. If someone has an original thought on the subject, I'll be pleased & mildly excited.

I make it a point to tell folks that I will not trade the beer they send me.

It bothers me the few times where somebody appealed to my emotional side to get rare beer from me and then they turned around and traded it away almost immediately. I have also found beer that I traded people on Ebay. How do I know it was beer that I traded? Because people list the bottle numbers.

I know that I should probably not care because those bottles are not mine anymore, but I feel like they lied to me to get something they would otherwise likely not have the ammo to pull out the trade.

I honestly could care less...Once your trade with the OP is completed, the beer is now the property of the OP...He could drink it, trade it, drain pour it, sleep with it, give it to Black Xantus for all I care as long as I was happy with the beer that I received...

    Cheers!

Sorry man. The thought was on my mind and just decided to post. I should have looked for previous threads such as this one before I posted.

I get what you and everyone else is saying, and I completely agree. I just get a lot of satisfaction providing people with beer they couldn't get otherwise. I guess I shouldn't be so sensitive to this issue. I suppose this happens more than I originally thought.

    Here is my take:
You trade rare beer X for rare beer Y and give him rare beer Q along with local beers A,B & C as extras.
    1. He trades rare beer Y for rare beer Z => you have no reason to be angry, this was the agreed upon trade and he can do what he wants with his beer
    2. He trades rare beer Q for rare beer Z => Now you have a reason to be upset. You went out of your way to hook him up with a beer you thought he would like and your action was a pure act of generosity. I understand its still "his beer to do with what he likes" but its a DICK MOVE to trade away extras for personal gain

    Cheers

Seems ironic to say that since you traded the beer to that person instead of drinking it.

Personally, I like to drink beer too much to re-trade it. Especially if it's something I have never had. What if it ends up being my favorite beer ever? If I had re-traded it before opening it, I would have never known...

This sounds awfully familiar... I think I'm going to contact my lawyer for possible plagiarism charges. Know any good ones?

I have never done it and won't. But, once it is your beer do what ever you want.

A lot of people within the community have some sort of sub-hobby within the hobby (ticking, collecting, drinking, trading for the sake of trading, profit, some combination of these or others), so I think it's hard to generalize the point of trading for everyone and the various reasons why one trades helps keep things interesting. Whatever one's primary goal is, it's always best to be honest about intentions and sensitive to others' expectations about a deal, and obviously, some of those sub-hobbies are easier to reconcile with this than others. But if you're hiding something from your trade partner or otherwise distorting the truth, that's not cool.

So do people that trade then go to the ISO:FT thread to see if their beer pops up? Really? I have about 15 completed trades and honestly every one of them could have re-traded those beers and I wouldn't even have known it.

    Who. Cares.

I'm too busy drinking the beer I traded FOR to worry about the beer I traded AWAY.
