It's more about understanding how to use your camera in low light situations (abundance of light is a no brainier). Sure if you have lighting, and know how to use it, your shots will be vastly improved. However you can take great shots just using what's available to you. This shot for instance was taken at Upright, they're located in the basement of an old converted warehouse building and have zero natural light. I didn't use extra lighting, just set the camera up correctly. And it took me less than a minute to get the shot.

This one is the best I've found of a beer event...

Any advice for someone who takes ugly ass pictures?

I love opening some of these picture threads and seeing these amazing pictures, makes we want to drink more beer.

Depends on the camera your using, and what functions your able to adjust.

Obviously the first and most important, is good framing (or composition). If your just starting out, focus on basics. Don't shoot extreme angles, or worry too much about setting. Get close to the beer, and if you can use a short depth of field (blur out the background, i.e. use a low aperture) do it. It brings the focus on the beer rather than what's going on behind it, this will also help you in lower light situations. Also shoot from a direction the the light in the room is behind you directed onto the beer rather than a light source that will blow your image out.

Have fun with it, because after all it's about the beer right.

That was last April at The Delirum Cafe Brussels, Belgium. Think I paid a lot, $60. It was worth at the time to me though.

Lets see , I drink beer out of the wrong type of glass , Im wrong for asking if I should try a beer when I dont enjoy the style , Im wrong for drinking an IPA thats more than 24 hours old , I'm wrong for ordering the tower of miller lite at the Mexican Joint down the road and now my pictures are not good enough? Man , Drinking beer sure is a lot more complicated than I thought it would be , I think I will find a hobby that is easier to learn , like Origami or Nuclear Physics , LoL

Seriously though I would like to see some picture blogs of peoples beer vacations, thats a good idea, I dont care if you take them with a poloroid camera from 1972 and scan them using a scanner from 1996 on a computer you bought in 2003

damn, I have done all of the aboive as well. Want to trade some half yard glassware and a 30-rack?

but I do agree, I dont care how you take your pictures of your adventures... I was just curious if there were any people combining my two loves. Success!

Ill ship a rare 30 pack of natural light that has been aged in the toolbox of a 1994 extended cab silverado parked under a shade tree in the middle of my uncles pig farm, but I have to have something of equal quality before I'll trade

While I understand where your coming from, there is a lot of "you're doing it wrong" responses on this site, I think you are misunderstanding this thread. I'm pretty sure the people posting here are in no way bashing on the mass majority of beer photos, but rather we just want to share ones that seem to go the extra mile. After all, aren't we all here to geek out on craft beer?

I would never turn down a good beer, but I'd rather have a great one.

This thread has made me want to figure out some beer glamor shots of my cellar. I'm still learning, but it's a decent start.

Not too shabby. I've played around with my lightbox a little, but I found I prefer to have a bit of a setting in my pics. Which, in most cases, is my homemade pub table in front of that giant painting I did years ago. Gives it a little bit of a unique look and makes it clearly mine, since no one else could possibly have either of those things and, again, I kind of like the standardization of it.

As for your shots, they'd be great for certain things, like accurately depicting the beer/label. Only thing I'd say is that they seem a little over exposed (on my monitor, at least) and I personally feel they could use a little more contrast. But then, I get pretty dark and contrasty.
