And instead of 'the state of Vermont', I'm thinking more 'a 30 mile radius of Waterbury'...[/quote]

More like 50 miles. Hill Farmstead is about 45 miles from Waterbury.

Not an entirely bad list, there are some good entries. Seattle, San Fran, Bend and Boston could be removed as far as I'm concerned though. Fort Collins over Denver.

But really, no Twin Cities on the list? The author hasn't been here, obviously.

You get Alpine, Three Floyds, Odell, Kuhnhenn, and Surly in Philadelphia?

The fremont/ballard neighborhood in seattle beats asheville by itself.

Comparing the beer culture of Cleveland to Seattle or SF is just crazy to me.

I feel you. Just like in Seattle, you can walk into a Mpls brewery, order up a pint or several to drink on premises, get your growler filled (regardless of the label on the growler), pick up some limited release bottles, and be on your way. Oh, wait...

This has been fun. I did mistitle my post, it should have been best brewery cities, but I figured people would click the link and figure that out.

Also happy to see no one is aruging that San Diego isn't tits.

San Diego isn't tits. Too spread out. Impossible to do a walking pub crawl. That's why Portland is better.

I love these threads. They bring out the people who are so insecure, it's of utmost importance to them that they live in a top 5 city.

I will be in SD in May and look forward to trying some of their great brews. My little bro raves about them.
I will repeat though, not having the "Waterbury, VT area" on this list is criminal. I suggest any of you that have never tried any of the many, MANY amazing brews from that area to stop what you are doing and immediately find a trade deal with someone in that area. You will quickly have the area in your top 10... if not top 5. Yes, it's that good.

It's changing...quickly. Good luck walking from Deschuttes to Hair of the Dog.

Considering the fact that I only visit about 4 breweries (and Deschutes who I consider more Bend in Portland) of the 50 in the city, I'm pretty sure we're not a top 10 brewing city. In terms of places I can go to get excellent beer,we're pretty well situated, however, Portland breweries need to step up their game a bit. Still no place in town with an IPA or DIPA like Boneyard, Heater Allen in McMinnville etc. etc.

Seriously? Deschutes Public House to HotD is about a 15 minute walk. You can't be that out of shape.

Which areas are up-and-coming as well as walkable for beer? I haven't been to any of the newish breweries like Societe, Rip Current, and Hess so I don't know where they are in relation to one another, but I always require a DD when I'm visiting my favorite breweries (Alpine, Pizza Port, Alesmith, etc). It's hard to top Portland in that regard--bitchin breweries all relatively close to one another. Even if you had to get to HotD from Deschutes, it's about a half hour walk at most.

Well we just passed a taproom bill here, so next time you come on over you'll be able to do just that.

And I never said Mpls was a top 10 beer city, I'm just saying that if Seattle is, then craft beer has a long way to go

It's hard for us SoCal folks to grasp the concept of walking since we live in our cars.

Is it that close? Driving across the river is such a pain, I may have my geography mixed up. SD is blowing up and while you won't walk from one side of the city to the other, each neighborhood is growing quickly with breweries/beer bars to keep you satisfied. Googled...it's 1.2 mi...didn't realize it was that close.

Eh, you're being modest. Just about any way you slice it, Portland is up there.
He's from SoCal. A 15-minute walk is called "going for a hike."

The neighborhoods are getting better with a mix of a few breweries/lots of beer bars. San Diego works more along the line of production breweries vs brewpubs...so they tend to be further out in industrial areas. SD>PDX in terms of size so a car is necessary. As area's in fill...it'll change. You can walk from Helm's Brewing to Societe, Alesmith to Hess and some newer brewery that's opened near by...it's a quickly changing scene.

I will say that on Sunday I spent the afternoon at Papago Brewing Company and had one of the most delightful afternoons listening to music and enjoying craft beer that I have had in awhile. All thanks to the article in Draft Magazine......then the GF dragged me to some pit of despair named Last Chance.

I'm looking forward to this change if that's the case. I'll probably check out some new stuff when I drive down to pick up Kopi Speedway.
