with that being said, then an employee should not be allowed to buy or hold a beer while on the clock or getting paid...

Touche my friend. I'm just happy I don't have this problem and our store doesn't sell out of anything in one day (yet. I'm making a big push to make our store more know to the craft world)

Agreed. Every job is shitty in some way or another. And yes jobs ought to have perks. But there's no automatic reason beer store employees ought to be entitled to this particular perk. And yes I did just use the "e" word. There's an awful lot of complaining on BA about entitled beer consumers, but clearly the same ideas apply to employees too.

Seems like you're just upset you didn't get your beer.

Not really a problem. My employees get first pick. Same limits as the customers though and they can't hold any for anybody eider. And you're also assuming that employees care about every single limited release. They really don't.

You mean stop buying from the store because they were sold out of beer? Are you that ridiculous?

nah, I stand behind my statement. Employees get first grabs. Are we not customers too? Are we not paying the same money you're paying? Of course we are. AND we have to deal with the crazies as stated above. Our management goes out of their way to make sure BOTH customers and employees are happy. We as employees go out of our way to make sure our customers are happy. But believe me when I say, we are getting ours.

That being said, there has been many times I have given a customer beer that I was saving for myself.

That's more of a gray area if they get the same fair shake at it as everybody else, but I'm not sure how you'd realistically pull that off. If it was a big timed release with ample notice and they had to wait in line like everybody else or something, then sure, that would probably be fine.

But even then... It's not that employees can't be customers, it's that their paycheck only exists so long as the customers are happy, and thus a good employee should put the other customers' needs before their own. Maybe I take an old school view of customer service, but the customer is king. There are plenty of other ways to provide employees with nice perks that don't involve gobbling up 75% of a tiny release allocation.

I think it is bad business to let the employees buy a beer if you don't have enough for your customers.

I think the solution is to let your employees buy whatever amount any individual customer could with the caveat that they cannot run their mouth about snatching it up. Just buy the beer and if somebody asks why it's gone, don't go telling them "on account of all the employees buying it up."

In beer stores, your employees are typically some of your best customers and spread the most word-of-mouth advertising. It's good business to keep them happy & loyal.

and if u gave me a beer u were saving for urself, it wold be a store id be a returning customer for, its all about customer service, holding a beer in the back for an employee is where it affects the customer in a negative way, like i said before, the title may be a bit misleading, but im ok with employees buying the beer, its when they start holding is when they arent there or whatever and im there while the beer is in the store and im willing to pay is where it would bug me a bit

I remember discussing something in this regard, and since we all have many ways to think about it, some will converge and some will not.

In this issue, I act like I would in all other areas of my life, and never worry about taking more then my share. Even if I was an employee at a bottle shop, I do not think of myself first. Since this is the way I am, I do NOT in any way suggest you do the same. No one has to follow, understand, or even respect your personal choice to be humble or kind. In my case, I go out of my way to bring beers to EVERY one I meet, whether it be other bottle shops, work, coffee houses, and the like.

I do agree employees get first dibs but with the choice to choose first we forget that we can also choose to pass up as well.

dont hate the players, hate the game. It freaking sucks to only get 1 or 2 cases of something special. But as stated, employees are customers too paying the same money. Its a consequence of having knowledgeable and well trained employees, instead of listless morons working in these places (debatable)

I'm a manager at a bar and when we recently had bourbon county stout on draft I didn't let employees drink it.
