I think you guys are missing the point... He wants guidance, not a treasure hunt! Lets start him out on a reasonable path.

    Stouts

    Old Rasputin
    Duck Rabbit Milk Stout
    Ten Fidy
    Founders Imperial Stout
    Yeti
    Dragon's Milk
    Stone IRS
    Sam Smiths Oatmeal Stout

As far as other styles, venture out.

    90 min ipa
    Troegenator
    Hopdevil
    Prima pils
    Duvel

In all reality, you'll never know if you don't try. For a sixer, go out on a limb. Worse comes to worse, you're a out a couple bucks on one beer! Just pick stuff that sounds good/cool

I am quite like you and newer to the craft beer scene, so I do the mix-a-six thing alot.

Typically the selection is limited in my area but I try to pick up a variety from each of the breweries that I can get stuff from. Some of my favorites are,

    1. Bell's (Two-Hearted)
    2. Odell (IPA)
    3. Southern Tier (Seasonal brews, or the 2X)
    4. Schlafly (AIPA this time of year)
    5. Left Hand (Enjoyed the sawtooth ale)

rather than a pile of stuff I've already had (undeniably would go for a 6pk of cherry rye), I'd want a pile of beers that sound amazing, but I can't get my grimy paws on:
    Hunahpu's Imperial Stout
    hill farmstead Everett Porter
    bell's black note
maui brewing CoCoNut Porter (I love love love coconut... and it's a huge tease that this isn't in nyc)
fine, and maybe a cherry rye. can't resist :stuck_out_tongue:

So here's some really great stouts that are all pretty readily accessible.

    Founder's Breakfast Stout
    Founder's Imperial Stout
    Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout
    Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout
Samuel Smith's The Famous Taddy Porter
Anderson Valley Barney Flatts Oatmeal Stout
    Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout
    Bell's Brewery Cherry Stout

That's a pretty good list for getting a good variety of stouts: imperial, coffee, chocolate, oatmeal, fruit, and even porters (a brewery's definition of a "porter" vs. a "stout" is ambiguous and pretty subjective--so keep porters in mind when trying stouts).

Also, try anything barrel aged; can't go wrong, for the most part.

I love imperial stouts as well, but don't limit yourself. I'd venture into all varieties of stouts to really nail down which styles are your favorites! And keep up with good breweries. One of the easiest ways to finding good beer is finding good breweries. That way, whenever you're just shooting in the dark you have an idea of good possibilities (that goes for all styles of beer, not just stouts).
