This is too big for just the Southern part of the forum, as some of you might know, MS is capped at 5% ABW, in resent years, Raise Your Pints has worked hard to get the cap raised. Last year, the bill never even made it to the house floor. This year, this is happening:
It's amazing, we got AB on our side, which helps. Pushing on the way this will help the economy helped, we had to settle for 8% ABW but it's a huge step in the right direction. We will not be held back like AL on bottle sizes, or like TN where 6%+ abv has to be sold in liquor stores. One more step away from victory, from being the last state with an ancient beer law. This is huge, so if every one could just send some positive vibes our way, and somehow have the Gov sign this bill, it'd be much appreciated. That $40 or more we spend on gas during beer runs should be spent on beer from July 1st on!

    Cheers!

Time to move!!! But, you could maybe take up homebrewing and buck the system. Good gawd, this is looking like Prohibition! (start homebrewing, seriously). In the East where I live, they monitor your fertilizer purchases and hopefully in your neck of the woods they don't monitor grain purchases!

The homebrew bill didn't make it past the house, it's still illegal here!

And we do (ahum not) brew every now and then

So AB is supporting it? Maybe this is a indirect way that the new "Platinum" is helping craft.

From a beer standpoint alone, MS sucks. I would move to somewhere better, like Asheville NC.

Now thats some bullshit. I wouldn't be able to drink most my favorites.

But seriously beer probably isn't the best reason to decide where you live so just brew your own. Its easy, fun, and taste delicious.

8% ABW in a state that is used to 5% is not an insignificant change--that translates to about 10% ABV if I'm looking at it correctly. There are many great beers out there that fall into that range. Getting them to come to the state after this bill passes is a whole other battle however.
Speaking from experience from WV, where our 6% (abv) cap was lifted just a couple years ago, as long as you can get the breweries to distribute in your state, life is getting ready to get much better.
    Congrats!

When Alabama raised its ABW limit there was almost instantaneous response from breweries. New Mexico has no restrictions at all but in just 3 years the availability of beer in Alabama is much better than out here. Whenever I visit my family in Mobile I end up bringing a carload of beer back with me.

The insane craft beer explosion in towns like Birmingham and Huntsville AL has helped our cause, just look at the jobs the new breweries created, or the extra specialty stores that opened and bring in more jobs and revenue. We used to make beer runs to TN, lately it's been nothing but AL runs.

I wish MS the best. Having watched Alabama transition from wasteland to (fairly) respectable in 3 years has been great...and they didn't even have the advantage of a great brewer like Lazy Magnolia beforehand either.

It has a strict limit on beer strength, yet at the same time has no restrictions against passengers OR DRIVERS drinking in an automobile. Strange. Well actually drivers still have to comply with the country's BAC limit, they can still have an open alcohol container while driving.

obviously because $15-30 11%ABV stouts are a gateway to all other kinds of things. Pretty soon people might come up with fermenting grape juice and creating 11-18% beverages, or worse they will use various sugars (cane sugar, malt, agave, even potatoes) to create a drink with a high concentrate of alcohol (20-45%ABV) and sold as low as half gallons for under $15.

This would be madness. WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN!
