I guess it depends what sour profile you are looking for, but these are the best readily available acidic sours in the Chicago area.

Tilquin Gueuze is a good one that is generally available.

I've been finding Drie Fonteinin around the city lately. Not the funkiest of beers, but definitely fits the bill and far as I understand it's rare enough here/there/anywhere that he'd probably appreciate it.

Duchess de Borgogne and Rodenbach Grand Cru is available pretty much everywhere I go in Chicago (definitely always in stock at Binnys). Same with Cuvee de Jacobins (mentioned above)

If you can find Madame Rose, Lolita or Juliet I'd nab one.

Ninja star, off guard, now you're injured!

Seriously though, if hes in Cali, he already has access to some phenomenal sours

send him juliet. buy drie fonteinen and tilquin and keep them for yourself. not that juliet isn't awesome (as it's probably GI's best production sour), but it's certainly easier to come by juliet as of late.

Timmerman's Oude Geuze. It's Shelf Beat. Right Scott?

(in all seriousness, buy the stuff. $15-20 for 750 ML of in your face sour goodness. Get it at the beer temple too)

Most of the beers mentioned are available in California. Get a pipeworks berliner or go to WLV and get a sour bitch. These won't be available to your friend in Cali

If he's a good friend, I suggest a batch 1 Bleu Lady as a joke.

This. I found Madame Rose while I was in Boston and really liked it. We don't get GI sours out here so I bought one to take home. Pipeworks would be good too, a trading partner sent me a Blue Lady and it was tasty.

We do. I think we get most of the beers they brew. They don't hold a candle to Cascade or RR though, so I'm not a huge fan.
