What's With the Lack of Extras These Days?

I've been trading on BA for over two and a half years and have probably done something like 60-70 trades (I've lost exact count), and I've noticed a disturbing trend of late. The last several trades I've done, I've received boxes that include no extras. This is after 2.5 years of this never happening to me once!

Did I miss a memo or something? Is this the new norm? I'm totally fine with not including extras if that's agreed to beforehand, but if that's not discussed, I always thought proper trader etiquette was to include at least something.

Ultimately it's not that big of a deal, as I'm not including super rare beers as extras and getting nothing in return. But I'm throwing in some local stuff to share the love and people aren't returning the favor, and that kinda sucks. What's the deal?

Haven't had this happen yet, fortunately. I usually make note in my negotiations now that I'll be sending extras.

An influx of shitty traders who didn't know what they were doing.

Apparently I missed them all last year and am encountering them all in 2013 instead.

I've been wondering the same thing. Not that I've been trading for all that long (and it's not happened to me personally), but I've seen things like a list of completed trades on someone's profile, and then an asterisk next to ones that "included extras." Up until then, I assumed all trades included extras (unless it was agreed upon beforehand not to do). Also, I was just giving some newbie trader a hard time for extra-ing "swag" when his trade partner extraed a bunch of beer. Swag is cool and all, but it can be a bit of a joke if it's not really something somebody wants (ie: a kickass piece of glassware, shirt from a brewery they love, etc.).

That's funny. I just had the same conversation recently, and I'm in the exact same boat as you. I've got 60ish trades under my belt, and I've never experienced this until lately.

Sometimes people are nice and send you Rice a Roni, couscous, Tic Tacs, or spare change.

I don't know, but they usually end up costing me about $500...

I just started trading in March and have a few under my belt. Always extras on my end and my sender's thus far. I can usually tell though because the trades that I have done have had great communication and a general excitement to share local beers. I almost exclusively extra local beers to help them get their names out there. The extras are at least half the fun in my opinion. Also, they make the shipping a lot more worthwhile.

When did people start feeling entitled to more than what was agreed for in the trade?

I'm a 2012-er, and every trade I've done has included extras (except for one IP trade at DLD, since that involved lugging a ton of beer around already). A little communication goes a long way -- "hey, how do you feel about extras?" or even just "I'm going to throw in a few cool locals" is usually enough. If it bothers you or you're not sure, just ask.

You should probably have enough regular trading partners by now, to where this shouldn't be a problem for you.

It's called being a "beer advocate." Remind me never to trade with you . . .

Why call them out, extras are "extras" and not needed unless it is agreed upon. I always toss some in but if people don't but send their end of the trade they didn't actually do anything wrong.

You would think so, but I actually only really have one regular guy I trade with. So if I want anything that's not from the PNW, I usually have to go to the forums. I've stopped and started trading too many different times (often for months at a time) to build up much of a regular rapport with other people. That said, if there are any Florida or Vermont traders who want to be my regular trading partners, I am accepting applications. I think something like 75% of my trades lately have been for Hill Farmstead or Cigar City beers.
