Assuming you're not trolling, including extras that you believe either the other person will enjoy based on their Wants/Hads and/or extras that are limited/fresh/cool that they otherwise don't have access to is generally accepted as a part of trading.

I agree with that sentiment. It isn't just about sharing more beer with someone willing to ship you beer you can't get, but it's about being an advocate for those breweries. I want my local breweries to be successful, and if people around the country want them in their distro that only helps. Pipeworks, Half Acre, Revolution, 3 Floyd's, and even smaller breweries in Chicagoland and Wisconsin will always find their way to homes I ship to.

Most of my trading partners thus far have killed it with awesome extras. I have learned from this and try to send extras that are local to me that they may not have regular access to and are very good or wants of theirs or hads that they rated highly. Crap locals are just that - crap. The one trade that I did that didn't involve extras was one in which I sent first and the box had 20 beers that were specified and I told him that no extras were coming because I had never shipped that many before and was reluctant to fill a box any fuller. They got there alright so I don't think I'll have qualms about it next time. For me, sending and receiving great surprise extras are what makes trading so much fun.

My experience trading with newer members has mostly been good. Only one or two that haven't included extras. Many more who have included a lot of extras.

Can't help you with those, but when I get some spare scratch together, I'd do a mixed-12 style locals-for-locals (I don't even go after highly rated/hyped stuff..... just random stuff I've never heard of.... a tick is a tick, and I've found great beers doing this, like St. Arnold's lawnmower or whatever)

Actually.... if anyone wants to do $4$ Head Hunter, Rajah, Lake Erie Monster, or whatever..... send me a list of 12 oz bottles of stuff I've never heard of, that you can pick up as singles, and I'll gladly work something out. Heck, I do any/all styles too.

I also can send BANE too.... recently found a good stash of it that I can't believe is on shelves, but alas it is....

Even when it's agreed that we don't send extras I send extras.

I feel it's poor form to do otherwise. I feel everyone should do this. Even a few shelf beers makes for an even more fun box.

If I feel this way and am a 2012er does this mean I'm doing it wrong?!

About the time everyone started feeling "entitled" ( God I hate that term as it is used on BA ) to start winning trades.

I do not call it "advocacy" or "karma", but most of us feel that it is fun to try to hook someone up above and beyond.

When BA started being all about " I saw this get done once, so..." and "what is the market value $4$, can I get reimbursed for getting a bad deal at the store?" The extras seem to dry up.

I've done roughly 70 trades now and have sent extras everytime but once and that was because it was requested by the other person. It was a 1:1 White Whale trade. I love sending extras and they usually are rare PnW beers that I love sharing with people as well as newly bottled stuff (fresh iipa's, sours, etc).

Anyways, I'm pretty happy to have killer regulars and besides them I've also lucked out with great one time traders. Hopefully the noobs start to pull their heads out their asses.

I tend to keep my extras to a minimum since 90% of my trades are international and shipping is spendy. Hopefully I don't have a reputation as the cheap Canadian.

Everyone always says 'extras are extra' but are then butthurt when they don't get any. Just very hypocritical if you ask me.

And my old screen name was Grbdg before I got the boot for some not so nice comments. So those wonderful 2012 references don't hold much weight. I just remember how things were a while ago before trading became a chore. And the OP is right, it really isn't a big deal. And stay off my lawn.

Bottle from Grbdg. Thanks for this amazing extra!
Pours a muddy brownish orange with a large and lasting white head. Smell is sweet, fruity, mildly hoppy and with a belgian yeast characteristic. Taste is hoppy with a strong belgian yeasty sweetness and spiced flavor. Much different flavor than any other DIPAs I've had. Slight hint of the 9% ABV. The hops, despite the IBUs, don't deliver the intense bitterness of many American style DIPAs. Unique, interesting beer. I enjoyed it.

If its a simple 1 or 2 bottle trade I ask the person if its okay to not include extras. And when you trade a lot shipping gets expensive. Going from a 2 bottle shipper to a 6 costs money. If the person communicates that they do not want extras I don't see anything wrong with it.

I'm really hoping the new trading review system will include something about extras. That will definitely help refocus people on the best part about trading.

It's not entitlement to expect people to abide by a customary practice. When 93.5% of BAs always send extras, and another 5.3% usually do (98.8%), it becomes a douche move to not include extras and not let your trading partner know it.

    http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/extras-poll.32704/

The 1.2% who usually don't or never send extras wouldn't hear a word from anyone if they just made it clear that they were not going to include anything. With the knowledge that most people send extras, to not send any yourself without mentioning it is akin to stealing.

That said, I always mention when I'm wrapping up a trade that I'll be throwing in a couple extras. You'd think that would solve the problem, but I've still gotten packages with nothing even after I've made it perfectly clear that I was including extras, and I never trade with those douches again.

Edit: Just wanted to say that most of my trades have been great. The numbers for me are about 95% that have included extras, and about 2% of the non-extra trades were agreed on.

And props to DanzBorin. I do the same thing. Even if we agree to no extras, I like to throw one or two in there.
