As the world's foremost authority on malt liquor (I've been running 40ozMaltLiquor.com for 13+ years now and have the world's largest collection of 40oz bottles w/ over 900), I'm proud to say I love it.

And I also love craft beer. There's room in one's heart (stomach... liver?) for both. OE, Colt & Mickeys are better than most pilsners, IMO. But I do admit, the high gravity malts are an acquired taste - but I find them more palatable than most barley wines.

MasterSki, would you be willing to sell/trade me the empty 40 for my collection? I've been trying like hell to acquire this bottle to no avail. The guys at the brewery were supposed to send some labels but never did, and everyone who's reviewed it on here & RateBeer (*gasp*) can't get it again & didn't save their bottles.

Midnight Dragon was available in 64oz (half gallon) bottles, not gallon bottles.

I was a fan of Mickeys in high school but can remember the last time I had one. Just to share I know a distributor that sells haffenreffer pounders and a bar with an OE neon in the window. Still love a forty and wish Edward scissorhands was around when I was younger.

Instead of 40s they talk about jug wine

Whoah, 2 posts from Bruz. Dude I lived on 40ozmaltliquor.com back in the day (circa 2001) and you sir are awesome. Can't say that I like all the changes to the website but still, you are one of my beer heroes.

Is St Ides still around? Wow, that makes me want to dust off my old Ice Cube CDs.

By far, the nastiest $hit I've ever had was Earthquake 12%. I bought one for $1.50, as well as Schlitz VSL, one night when I was going shark fishing. It was all I had to drink, lack of foresight, and I still couldn't choke it down. It made the VSL taste half way decent.

I can at least partially credit malt liquors as an essential part of a young beer fans evolution. Back in the younger years, it was common to come to a crossroad--- continue on drinking whatever the hell cheap lager you started with, or branch out. Granted, most choose to branch out to malt liquors for other than noble reasons (stronger=drunker), but it plants the seed of experimentation. After mowing through more St. Ide's 40s than an entire Crip set during a hot Summer, the realization happens that it tastes terrible, and you can move onto other fuller body, stronger beers seamlessly and without hang-ups. The pink elephant on a Delirium bottle seems less imposing than the Blue Bull, and on from there. I still sip a 40 on occasion for nostalgia, and it isn't bad; it isn't good either but oh we'll. Passing a Colt 45 round a barrel fire was somewhat better than the other choice we often made back on the chillier nights of my time spent on the road, Mad Dog. Got you lit from panhandle money and made you forget hunger and cold.

Taste? Malt Liquor don't need no good taste, just needs to taste uncrappy enough to get past the epiglottis.

Hope I never am in that position again, but guarandamntee it won't be until then I have another Colt 45, or any ML for that matter.

Anybody else try Pit Bull? That dog will NOT hunt. I was looking at my ML reviews, I've had a few in my day.

Sometimes if I feel the need to make my stomach incredibly hot and my head incredibly unpredictable, I'll drink an irresponsible amount of Steel Reserve. But that's only every so often

I used to have a Schlitz Malt Liquor every now and then, the odd Colt 45 in HS, we thought it would get you drunker faster, ABV was an unheard of number. I do find that Steel Reserve is freaking vile, no way in hell I could or would finish a can of that shit, maybe as bad or worse than drinking skunked German stuff.

Friend of mine moved from the US to China to teach English (and sleep with Chinese girls).
Whenever he gets back to the US, the first thing he does, is get a case of Steel Reserve or OE; and when he gets through that, the next thing he goes for is a micro IPA or IIPA.

I thought I was the only one who remembered the Midnight Dragon, I loved that shit! First time I went to NYC with my friends we were all underage yet somehow managed to buy some from one of the bodegas. We hop out of a cab, I popped my Midnight Dragon, as soon as a popped it open, a cop came over and made me dump it out!
When we would have a couple of extra bucks, we would splurge for Crazy horse or St. Ides! Good times.
By the way, that beat in the Wu St. Ides commercial is bananas!
