For me it's a toss up between the UK and Germany. While I love a drop of Bateman's ofr Harvey's, it's hard to beat a cool glass of Lager Mild on a hot summer's day.

Belvoir Dark Horse. It's a reincarnation of Shipstone's Mild and is a revelation about just how much flavour can be wrung from just 3.4%.

(I wish) the US. Sadly, it looks like I'll have to wait until I can get back to England to sate my thirst. However, there is a new, tiny production brewery right here in town which brews a 3.5 %, 35 IBU 'brown ale' that I think can comfortably be called a mild. It uses a bit of Briess' Cherrywood-smoked malt, but doesn't have that 'smoked beer' character; pretty darn good!

Asks for a country and receives a list of beers, which is based on ratings mainly from US patrons for a beer style which very seldom is seen in the country.
    Try again.

I must try and find this when I'm over in August. Have I any chance of finding it in Newark?

I'll ask the brewer. Always available at the Brewery Tap in Old Dalby , not very far if you'll have a car available when you visit.

Are there many Dark Milds brewed in Germany?

I'm gonna get chewed out for this,
    but my favorite "Dark Mild"
is Commercial Suicide from Jester King.
    I know it's not traditional
    [IMG]
Also, Monk's Milk from Brasserie St. James in Reno.
They take the spent grains from their Quad, &
brew a batch of "Small Beer" w/ it. Such a good
    session ale.

    So,
If we're going by pure taste over convention,
I guess I'd have to say America.

Yeah, all the Munich breweries do one. They call it Dunkles, but I always think of it as Lager Dark Mild.

Maybe I can persuade my mate Henry to drive me out there.

I've had two delicious Dunkels this year, Brauerei Eck's Wilderer Dunkel and Faust's Scwartzviertler Dunkel. I've never been to the UK and we don't get many of your beers here, so I guess by default my vote goes to Germany.

To answer this question intelligently, you would need to have a lot of money and time.

A dark mild isn't a beer that lends itself to being packaged and sent all over the world, so you need to go to (or near) the brewery to really appreciate the beer at its best.

There could be a small pub in New Zealand producing a 3.2% nectar of the gods the locals drink as fast as it can be brewed.

I personally would vote for the UK having the best dark Mild beers.

My favorite mild beer is Yards Brawler preferably on cask.

    “Brawler

    Pugilist Style Ale

Boasting superior taste and champion flavor, Brawler is crafted in the style of English session ales. This malt-forward, ruby colored ale features flavors of freshly baked bread and caramel that dominate the aroma and palate.

    ABV 4.2%”

    Cheers!

Ive been meaning to buy mild+, but if it includes dunkles, I dont know if that makes me more or less likely to do so.

I'm certain this is rhetorical, but the way you have worded this makes me have to ask--you know Yards is a PA brewery?

Agree with UK for milds. But since the UK is not a country per se but is instead a sovereign state of 4 separate countries (3 of which have devolved administrations), I'll go with England proper. Particularly Midlands and north.

A skim of your hads list shows the vast majority to be American beers with a small smattering from Belgium and Germany. The only British beers I saw we're two from St. Peters - neither milds. So you go ahead and claim we make the best milds without any familiarity with the numerous cask milds from the country that originated the style .

Thanks for sharing your informed and objective insight.

“you know Yards is a PA brewery?” Yup, I have been there many times. They brew my favorite mild ale – Brawler (on cask).

If the UK is considered to be an unacceptable answer for “Which country brews the best Dark Milds?” (I ‘expanded’ the question to a plural) then I ‘vote’ for England.

    Cheers!

No, it doesn't include Dunkles*. You'll find them in Decoction!.

    * Apart from one small part where I recollect drinking Dark Lager in Central Europe.

Milds are ales, period. I've never seen German dunkels included. It's not just a matter of low abv. English Dark Mild Ales are a specific beer style.
