I do like this idea better than your suggestion of a way to utilize the information to actually claim that your competitors don't care about their customers.

If it were me, I would advertise that any IPA on draft is guaranteed to be no more than xx days old. And that customer should feel free to ask server/bartender for kegged date. This accomplishes what you are trying for while cutting out much of the extra work of keeping menus updated.

I guess I'm under the impression that we cover this already.. we make it pretty plain that our taps are cleaned often. Customers actually see staff cleaning lines in between tap changes... and the few taps that rarely change out get cleaned every 14 days at the outside.. and we talk about that issue with our customers a LOT.

From whom? Employees, distributors, customers? (For the latter, I would have thought "Who would object?" but there they are, in several posts above. Don't understand the concept of NOT wanting information. One is always free to ignore it.)

Yeah, day would be fine. "Tapped on: Tuesday". Don't need the exact time.

If in a pub I would naturally assume that keg beer will always be pretty much the same. Now cask... that's way more complicated! Really though, how bad can it be?

Don't do it, I think it would feed the assumption that only the freshest IPA in the rotation is the best. IPA's don't go "bad" after 60 days, they go "different". Some are best fresh, some are best with a little age. Posting the Kegged On Date is gonna encourage people to skip the older kegs and just go for the latest one.

Honestly, I do not want to have to perform a chore at a bar or restaurant. I will check the dates on bottles I buy at the store but I'll leave the management of the tap room to the people who work there.

I like fresh beer as much as the next guy, but anal retentiveness has reached the breaking point.

Thanks so much... If you've been to our bar you know we print new menus pretty often. Adding the kegged on dates is just another notation on the menus each time print them.

It's become more complicated than I expected because the distributors are taking new deliveries of kegs when they still have quite a few of the " older" kegs in the warehouse. I frequently know when the trucks come in with fresh batches but have to either request a special delivery of the fresh batch ( if they are even willing to do it) or wait until the entire market is sold out of the old batch before I can take the new. Sometimes means that the beers are sitting in the distributors warehouse for 30 days or more before I can access them because the 60 or 90 day product has to move out first. I find that very frustrating... But perhaps I'm being way to picky.

Seems a bit OCD to me. But, look at some of the things our fellow BA's do, and post, and I'd say we're a pretty OCD bunch to begin with.

Despite what BAs think, they are not the majority when it comes to the craft beer market. Like it or not, the majority does not care that much about freshness dates. Before we go around claiming what a great service this would be to the customer base. please realize that most of the customers do not care.

Edit: Please don't make the argument that "they don't know enough" either. They know enough to drink what they like and they are getting by just fine.

This seems to be too much work for too little benefit. Would I like it? Yes. Can I assume that the keg of DHF 90 at the bar is fresh enough? Yeah.

If I have a question about it, I'll ask the bartender; if they're any good, they'll know. Anyone who cares enough about craft (and specifically IPAs) will just ask if it's at all in question.

Seems kind of pointless to me. Once the beer has been kegged, it's already guaranteed to be older than the ideal IPA. Will you install a drain right below the tap handles where consumers can pay to help you drainpour it?

This is a severe problem in my area, and too often the reps don't really have the info on exactly what "version" of something is in their laptops - some cryptic like "Seasonal" is all the SKU they have to go on and so the good stuff just sits.
