DFH Indian Brown Ale. Is there anything out there similar in taste/mouthfeel?

    Brooklyn Brown.

I am sure other BA's will chime in with better ideas, but both seem hoppy for Brown Ales to me.

DFH indian brown is strange since, if I'm not mistaken, it is a cross between a brown ale and a scotch ale. Good question. To me, it's a whole different animal.

The closest resemblance that I can think of is Smutty's Durty.

I love that stuff. Upslope makes another really good brown, hoppy and sweet.

Haven't had a DFH Indian Brown in quite a while...need to revisit this beer sometime soon.

Yah, love me some DFH Indian Brown. It was the brown that got me back into the style again. I don't know if I would call it similar or not, but CC Maduro Oatmeal Brown is not your standard brown ale and definitely worth a try (though not readily available in NY).

Since you're in NY, you might be able to find Voodoo Wynona's Big Brown Ale. I actually prefer it over DFH.

DFH Indian Brown was actually the beer that really got me into craft beer. DFH doesn't have distribution in my area anymore so I haven't had it in a few years; I've been considering using an online source to have some shipped to my house. does anyone no a good site that can get me some good brews that are still decently fresh?

Foothills out of Winston-Salem, NC makes a similar style, which I enjoy a lot, but I can say it isn't as highly rated.

I've never found anything else like it on the west coast. It's the best expression of that end of the brown ale spectrum. Moose Drool is a low octane brown in the same neighborhood.

I thought Great Lakes Nosferatu tasted like a brown DIPA.

I'll second Smuttynose's Durty for a hoppy brown. Boulder Beer's best offering, in my opinion, is their Flashback, another hoppy brown.

However, what makes Indian Brown so perfect for me is the Scotch ale tinge. I have yet to find another beer that combines the brown/hoppy/Scotch ale flavors.

An American strong ale that they renamed an imperial red, and you think that it tastes like a brown imperial IPA.
Something tells me the ol' style guidelines are no longer useful at all.

Well, the "American Strong Ale" has always been a very wide catagory... And yeah I saw a lot of reviews talking about red ale malts and I don't doubt they are in there if the brewer recategorized it, but I still think I tasted more roasty brown males than red [plus hops of course]...whatever....it's all more than a little subjective.

Not really, it's a pretty unique beer.. it's one of my all-time faves and I've always looked for something similar with no luck.. I'm sure there's something out there that's similar, but I've never come across it..

Hybrid betw. scotch, brown and ipa (hence the india in the name). Malty, hoppy, creamy even - another outstanding DFH offering and it is too often overlooked. Can't think of something to substitute. Liked Flying Fish's Chestnut Crown Ale
