quote="willbm3, post: 1993604, member: 429594"]While having manners and generally being a nice person are important, it doesn't exactly make anyone a regular. You aren't a regular just because you refrain from being a complete dick. In fact, if you aren't in some way memorable, how would the myriad different employees working in the store when you happen to shop remember you enough to do you a favor?[/quote]

I think pretty much any employee in the retail industry would appreciate a customer that offers the same courtesy to them as they expect for themselves regardless of the amount of money spent.

If I spend 100.00 a week and show appreciation to the employees like I always do and you spend 100.00 a week and act like an arrogant prick, then I have to believe the said "whale" would be brought to my attention long before yours. No?

That's awesome the guy was polite and provided you the information on the delivery truck, but he is certainly not obligated to tell you that, and those who refuse to do it shouldn't be chastised for it.

In all fairness, will you honestly go in to a store half way across the state to buy beer if the guy said they don't have the beer you're looking for, but wasn't a "dick?" I'm skeptical...

Glad to hear you're not a truck chaser - they SUCK!

I don't mean to single you out Rekule, but I just don't get what you guys are getting at with this. We do remember faces, just like you guys remember all the people you deal with at your job. To add to that, our job in the service industry is to approach you and be friendly, just like you do with people at your job. I don't get how someone can't end up building a relationship with someone who goes out of their way to build one with you.

I'm another one for do it like most every other retail sales store of 1st come / 1st serve vs. VIP, frequent flyers, lottery etc. Occassionaly someone non-deserving gets a purchase, but most whale chasers I'm guess really want to try the brew (or turn around and sell for black market profit, but retailer shops can limit volume of purchase to curb that).

This works. There's a regular customer at my store who I remember because he's always buying beer first thing in the morning. We're talking 10 minutes after the doors open when there's barely anyone shopping for breakfast, let alone booze.

Alot of different type businesses have loyalty programs. I'm not sure why so many people are bothered with bottle shops having one as well. It's pretty simple...

You don't have to spends hundreds of dollars a week or come in every week for that matter. I think all most shops would ask is if you are looking to them for the limited stuff, purchase your everyday/weekly drinking bottles from them as well. And if you are not a local, how about browse the store and maybe purchase a bomber or two before asking, "You have any KBS, Hopslam, etc."

I feel like stores who will actually tell the truth over the phone are naive. If you want to be flooded by people who don't shop at your store and will never shop there again, unless you get a "whale" in, then go right ahead.

I almost always try to go in to the store and ask in person. Some stores they may recognize me, or see that I am on their rewards program/email list/etc.. and know I am a regular customer. If I am going to a new store, I may try to ask while buying something else so I don't look like a guy who just wants to clear them out of one beer.

I have found that this works pretty well, talking to them in person, especially after making a purchase will get store owners to speak to you honestly.

I always tell small shops that they should not put the rare stuff on beermenus.com until a few days after they get it in. Or else they will just be cleared out by someone who never shops there. I want to support small neighborhood shops, but if they tell anyone and everyone that KBS or BCBCS is in, then the regulars won't have a chance.

The shop I work at gets tons of calls whenever something like Darkness, BCBS, KBS, etc. are about to hit stores. My coworkers and I are always honest about what we have, no matter who is calling. Most people are polite and understanding if we tell them we don't have what they are looking for, but every now and then I get a customer who seems to think that I must be lying and/or hiding the good stuff from him or her. To these type of customers I would just like to say this: Get your head out of your ass and follow us on twitter! When we get it in, we'll let you know!
