I'm drinking Scottish beers to celebrate Burns Night. Traquair House Ale, Ola Dubh 1991 and probably from newer breweries Luckie Ales 1841 XXXP Porter as the night goes on. Maybe a Tempest Barrel Aged Old Parochial Imperial Scotch Ale too. I hope its OK to say that again as my previous thread about beers on Burns Night was moderated out of existence earlier in the day. I don't want to ruffle any feathers and actually advocate something which should be the backbone of this site or anything. Heaven forbid.
    Slainte!

Did this today as well, Het Anker Cuvée Van De Keizer Blauw is the clear winner! Both these beers are good in their own right, just not what I will be buying again for a long while. The edge goes to Enjoy By though, for being 9.4 and no alcohol burn at all. I'm a craft lush... Don't judge me!

It looks like a snowglobe outside. I tried plowing the driveway twice, now...here's my opinion on that.

    Oh...
    The weather outside is frightful
But the beer inside, so delightful
Since we've no place to go!

    Can a 3.7 and a 3.9 from Elysian be blended into a 4.0 Black & Pale? Yes!
Black & Pale of Elysian SplitShot (3.7) and The Immortal IPA (3.9) is a 4.0.

    Why?
The trouble with Immortal IPA is it's too fruity and peachy and in our face.
The trouble with SplitShot is it's a little too sweet and thin, and too coffee gimmicky.

The blend tones down the fruitiness of Immortal with the roasted char notes of Split Shot.
The IPA ironically gives it more body and a longer finish.
A complex nuanced, Black & Pale, that I would drink again and again, where as left to their own, I'd choose others over each of the parts.

Below today's review of Split Shot on its own

    Elysian Split Shot 3.73
    look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75

Elysian is adventurous Seattle brewer, a city famous for craft and coffee. But this one is mid-pack.
I am an avid expresso drinker, drink it half-caff all day long, and often side by side with beers, and sometimes poured into a beer. So no stranger to coffee. However, almost as much as with fruit juices, I much prefer to add my own than have the brewer add it.

A: Pours opaque black coffee body, just like from my espresso machine, a little darker, head fades to about the same crema. Good lacking. A bit lacking in body.

S: The Coffee is not over-done. It's all dark roasted malt, wood char, hay. with hints of coffee, espresso, and cream. A bit too subtle

T: Follows smell, malts with more bittersweet espresso, more like a dry stout, drier than expected, from there it's a nice finish well balanced between sweet and bitter, good tingle, good long finish, lands slightly sweet but not cloying.

M: A little thin compared to most milk stouts, smooth, chalky, medium-light body.

D: A light-drinking stout, roasty with plenty but not too much espresso and milk. I'd prefer a full on milk stout like Left Hand or Nitro.

Since there's more leeway here in WBAYDN, I'll repost (more-or-less) my nod to Robert Burns with a little Auld Land Syne...

...and, since I've no Scottish ale on-hand, a bit of Scotch whisky...
