i was watching BeerGeekNation review of Sweet Repute and he said they age it in maple syrup laden bourbon barrels, which they get from a maple syrup company that uses bourbon barrels to age maple syrup in

    this sounds good to me

Bacon Maple was not that bad. It is totally overpriced, but not even near drain pour. I would say "ok".

Should be close enough, this one was bottled. De Molen also did a beers on Balsamic Vinegar barrels. I loved those beers but most people hated them which brings me to the question what they expected? Anyway they did say that the barrels were insanely expensive down to the point that De Molen will never buy them again.

They had AC aged in rum barrels at FoBAB. That beer was magical.

Maybe more brewers do this than I'm aware of (since percentages aren't usually listed on bottles), but I'd be in favor of more partial-barrel aging. Beers like the Abyss, where the roast is uber-prominent, benefit from having an oaky, vanilla edge, but it doesn't overwhelm the base beer. The mouthfeel and body on big roasty imperial stouts are great, and outside of BCBS and Uncle Jacobs I think most big BA stouts have their body diminished by 100% barrel aging and all the booze that comes with that. More 20% - 35% BA stouts and porters would be my vote.

But like I said, maybe I'm wrong and more brews are partially barrel aged than I'm aware of.

I'd like to see every brewery stop just jamming things into barrels. I want to see more places spend the time to craft an amazing base beer and put time and effort into thinking about what barrels to put it in and for how long. There are just too many breweries jamming a mediocre base beer into the cheapest barrels they can get.

More rum barrels being used or just, I don't know, making good beer on its own.
