Did anyone actually get tickets or is the site fucked up? Said sold out as soon as they went on sale.

It was insane. I was refreshing the page every few minutes for like a half hour before. So so crazy. If that's how it's gonna be, a raffle seems more reasonable. I.e., if it's luck of the draw, come out and say it.

That being said, I think they did a decent job of going about it. It's all for charity, and there's no waiting in line for half the week.

Is this beer at all worth the hype? I had Hops of Fury from Beachwood, and it was outstanding, but not worth waiting in line for. Has anyone had both? Is Younger really such a transcendent experience?

Out of curiosity and genuine interest, which comparable beers would you consider better? Or is it more that there are beers that are so close to being as good as Pliny that it doesn't make the extraordinary efforts necessary to taste it worth it?

It is a very good beer, but it's not as unique as it used to be. Other breweries have caught up in the realm of hop mastery on high abv IPAs (Alpine, HF, etc.)

Drink Roustabout, be happy. Last year I blind taste tested 10 oz pours of PtY and Roustabout side-by-side and couldn’t tell the difference (I totally thought I’d be able to, having had both multiple times), and did the same to several of my beer geek friends and none of them could tell the difference either.

And this batch is even better – to me it tastes like a “Double Pupil”.

Funny, I think this latest batch isn't as good as last years. Though to be honest, I am not much of a IIPA / IIIPA person. I prefer a lighter, crisper IPA.

I love Roustabout. That sounds like a great consolation. Consolation sounds like it might be selling Roustabout short though... at any rate, it's delicious

I was able to try it for the first time at Verdugo Bar last night. I waited in a line that all told wasn't that bad, but after tasting it and enjoying it, I don't think it's something I'd wait in line for again. Don't get me wrong, it was a very good beer, but for my buck, some beers from El Segundo or other breweries in Southern California (Beachwood), are more up my alley. I thought PtY was a little too malty and sweet for the flavor profile I like in any level of IPA.

Oh definitely, same here – I get my taster of Roustabout, and then get full pours of Pupil.

Simtra from Knee Deep is a great IIIPA IMO.

    For 11%+ DIPA's...
I like Simtra better. The other one that gets thrown into the conversation is always Exponential Hoppiness, I thought that beer was pretty bad, any hype behind it is generated because of the brewery it comes from rather than the merits of the beer itself IMO. At 10.5% I also like Hop 15 better.

Under 10% there are probably 2 dozen DIPA's I think are better.

I put back a few pints (yes, full pints) of that Wednesday rather than wait in line at the Hamilton's sh&t show, and I was more than happy. Completely hidden alcohol in that one...

Why were you refreshing the page every minute a half hour before the release? You only need to refresh it when the time comes. All you're doing is slowing the down the website and making it more likely to crash.

I've never heard of Roustabout until now, must have some on my next trek to SD. SD is like the Mecca of craft, we'd like to move there eventually and I know where I'll be spending my free time and money!
I agree with the Simtra comments, it's my very favorite period. It's getting too popular though, hard to find anymore unlike the good old days. I scored four bottles yesterday that was bottled on the 19th, they are getting recognition which I knew was due to happen, most of their stuff is pretty incredible, and now always fresh whenever I can find it. It's a safe bet to assume the four cases of Simtra my source got yesterday is likely sold out. Both cases of Hoptologist sold out within a few hours, it sells out as fast as Pliny!
I hope everyone who experiences PtY finds it worth the wait, I doubt I'll ever have it because I don't have the patience to wait in line for beer...

I was at Verdugo too that night (after waiting in line at RR last year), and was able to score a second pour. Here's the thing, and I don't mean to discourage anyone from trying to taste PtY, but it's really hard to judge this beer on a 6oz. taste. It really develops as it warms up and fills your palate. By the end of that second pour (and my second 10oz pour at RR last year), I was going fuck, that's why people fly across country and wait in lines for this thing. It becomes more and more dank, hoppy, and layered. My new philosophy about tasting PtY is that I think I will wait in line, but not for 6oz. It just doesn't do it justice.

Looks like Tiger!Tiger!'s tickets were gone within a minute today. By the time I was done checking out and looked at the event page again (12:01), it was showing as Sold Out. I thought it might last marginally longer since it wasn't posted on their Facebook or on BA, but apparently not.
