Hi all, been following BA and finding answers to most of my questions for a while now. Lately I've been really into Brett/wild fermented beers. After searching the boards I don't see anything really specific to my question so tell me: what's your favorite funky, barnyard, bretty brew? Have you ever had a Brett/wild fermented brew that was just too in your face? Thanks in advance BA's.

From the US, Russian River Temptation.

From Belgium, Cantillon Gueuze or Drie Founteinen Schaerbeeksie Kriek.

As for pushing the limit I'd say it was Hanssens Experimental Cassis that was almost too much.

I wish I could afford to pick up as many bottles of Boulevard Saison-Brett as I'd like to but then my retirement fund would consist mostly of Boulevard Saison-Brett... which, come to think of it, would be fine by me.

Cascade Kriek was quite intense on the horse taint/ barnyard and I loved it. Jolly Pumpkin La Roja is the first sour I ever had and it's pretty hard to beat, and it's pretty widely available I believe.

Whatever one I can get my hands on. Sometimes Vielle and Surette come around, but that's about it.

As far as widely available to me, I'll take a 3 year old Orval any day of the week. And I almost always have no problem landing them aged off the shelf.

An infected bottle of Fantome. Clear brett infection, equally clear cork mold infection. Delicious, 3rd best bottle of beer I've had.

I like sofie for its subtle brett influence.
I like st bretta for showing me brett doesn't mean horse blanket and funk all the time.
I loved wwbv for its intense brett flavors.
I drainpoured blueberry petite sour for its obvious blue cheese and vomit aromas.

Ditto the Sofie and Orval for me, bonus points for being widely available.

Anchorage Bitter Monk is another great one.

As far as too 'in my face', it would have to be a GI Fleur with a few years on it that was all brett, and it steamrollered right over the floral aspects. If they make that one again, drink it right away.

You mean TCA? I had that with some Hanssens bottles and it didn't work so well in that case.

I miss GF Rayon Vert for the huge brett bomb that it was, carbonation issues and all. The pluming, billowy head was always a spectacle. That beer was underrated in my opinion and the 4-pks were cheap and convenient for a quick brett fix.

Boulevard Saison-Brett is wonderful. GI Matilda is nice for also coming in 4-packs.

Gonna skip beers that trend more towards the sour and focus on pure funk. And in that context, my favorites have already been said: Saison-Brett and Orval.

Rayon Vert is another great one if you have some patience when it comes to pouring and are fortunate enough to find it since GF isn't actively producing it right now.

And Hop Savant is pretty fantastic as well, albeit pricey--100% Brett fermented.

Jolly Pumpkin trumps everything out there for me. Oro de Calabaza is 5/5 material & would easily be in contention for my "desert island" beer.

Mine have been said, too, but I haven't had too many to begin with.

Boulevard Saison-Brett. Try it fresh for a light harmony of Brett and Mosaic hops, then try aged for the funk
    Crooked Stave Hop Savant
    Anchorage Bitter Monk

Also a huge fan of the local 2nd Shift's Katy, an oak aged low gravity hoppy Brett.
[IMG] Available online from wineandcheeseplace.com if interested. The Boulevard is probably online too, actually

For recently released beer, I was really surprised how good Gose Gone Wild was. Grab one if you see it!
