Hey it's mid August time to start the ofest talk. Feel free to pipe in with thoughts on any you have had.

    I've sampled three so far.

Lakefront Ofest-Very impressed with this. Toasty malt....medium to light bodied....drinkable....seems pretty authentic...

Sam Adams OFest-I always like this one and while it may not be very similar to the German offerings it is a tasty malt forward lager with nice toasted caramel flavors...

Summit OFest-Just a mess....more so than ever before.....boozy as always but really lacking in any traditional ofest characteristics...the aroma is enticing enough but the flavor is just real syruppy and boozy......I can still find the Unchained fest beer by me and I will be investing in that as my Summit Ofest this year...won't be getting this one again but that could just be my tastes...try for yourself..

Too early, ZAP! Try me again in about a month. :grinning:

P.S. Sam Adams Oktoberfest was better -- last year.

It is working its way down to OF @Stimulus199, that way when people want to talk of OFs in prepositional phrases, we will all be really confused. Personally, I'm looking forward to it :stuck_out_tongue:

I had to click on this thread just to see what the hell that trainwreck of a title meant...

I bet that if you still had your muscle man avatar they wouldn't have said anything. They're nothing but OFest hating girly men. [here is where I'd add an emoticon, but my phone won't let me]

Compared with what some people post in the Midwest forums now, Zap's easily getting a bye.

I will participate further in the thread in a few weeks. Hope it was a bad day for Summit Oktoberfest. I always liked it and buy a couple 12-packs a year. It is by no means close to style, but an imperial version. Lakefront I fail to believe they put out quality product. If it gets your seal of approval, I will buy a sixer. Still reminisce about $12 twelve packs of Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest. Those got me through six months of the year. Stupid importer.

I looked at my review of the Lakefront from years ago and it was not good then but this year is solid...

Yeah thanks...I've learned long ago there are pricks on this site who would not raise an eyebrow to me in person but like to...well...just be pricks....whatever...this is a diversion for me. I don't lose any sleep over anything that goes on here...For those all worked up I do apologize if the title was not up to code....but f'n A settle down...or we could talk it out sometime in PERSON...

The Oktoberfest and Fuel Café swore me off of all Lakefront brews years ago.

Apologize? Why would you apologize. The title of this thread couldn't be any more clear. Honestly, unless you are clinically stupid, OFest is obviously slang for Octoberfest. Some people can't help but be dicks, it's how they were raised. Fuck them.

Ahem, on to the thread! Tried two OFest type beers this evening. Both Sierra Nevada offerings from their fall pack. A Vienna Lager and an Oktoberfest. Personally, as much as I enjoy a nice rich, Munich malt heavy OF, the versions brewed in the US (that's the United States) tend to focus way to fucking much on the malt. Yes, malt is a component of OF, but like most old school Deutsch lagers, it's all about balance. Sierra Nevada's version is ok. It hits all the right notes, but tastes like an instant coffee version of the real thing. Nothing special. Their Vienna Lager on the other hand blew me away. Malty, crisp, balanced, beautiful!

I'll add this, and perhaps back track a bit. SN's OF isn't bad. Not at all. It's just a bit "heavy" for my personal taste when it comes to OFest. Almost like Doppelbock Lite if that makes sense. I can't picture myself drinking a couple of liters of this in München at the end of Sept. A fine beer none the less.

OK...my post was dickish. Sorry about that. I meant no offense, but I can certainly see how some was taken. I wasn't worked up at all, nor did I mean to rile everyone up.

So, beer. I like it. I think the last Oktoberfest I've had was Leinekugel's. Probably not a good example of the style. I'd be keen to try Surlyfest, but is it $17 like all their other seasonals?

I had some of this year's Summit Oktoberfest. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly notable either.

Who else is brewing an Oktoberfest locally?

Has anyone seen Leinenkugel's Big Eddy Uber-Oktoberfest around the Cities? I picked up a four-pack late in the season last year and remember enjoying it--even if it's not at all representative of the style.
