As others said, you could have the same profit margins on beer as there is on wine. Then you can have your coupons.

I don't think you want that situation.

Again, beer is already a relative bargain by a wide margin, especially being able to enjoy best of the best on a modest budget.

At one of the bottle shops that I worked at, the mark up on beer was only 3%, and the other one was at about the same rate. Liquor stores that sell beer only do so to get possible wine/spirits consumers in the door, not for profit in the least (with the exception of bad liquor stores that price gouge rare beers).

At 3% they are losing money.

You should burn that store down.

At the store I work at we offer 10/15% off of 6/12 single bottles of craft, anything from 375-750ml. You can also mix with wine to get the same deal.

    Only place I've seen that.

There's a local place that has 15% off the mix-6. There's a bit of a markup, so you don't really save a whole hell of a lot, but ANY discount on beer is exciting for me. The good part is that they get rare stuff.
I've never seen it anywhere else unless it's close coded or damaged.

As others have said the margins on wine are generally much higher than beer, so there's more room to give discounts.

Im sure that there's no discount for higher end wines equivalent to some of the beers you're buying. The Parabola of the wine world probably only goes up in price as it ages, just like Parabola.

I've learned in life to never compare. You'll be constantly disappointed. Just be happy with what beer and beer prices are.

Bring the issue up with your local bottle shops...they have a better chance of discounting the beer that you buy than a bunch of half drunk BAs :stuck_out_tongue::grinning:

We should probably start a thread about soda pop being discounted at $1/2L bottle. Those f'ing diet coke addicts get all the breaks.

That depends how you define "higher end" wines. If you mean very limited bottle count cult wines available only on subscription (Screaming Eagle or something), then yes, but I've never seen wines for sale in a retail store that didn't still qualify for the discount if you bought a case, even if they were several hundred dollar bottles of wine (for example, among other wines I've received such discounts on have been bottles of Chateau Margaux for about $500). I suppose it depends on the store, though. Usually, you pick out your wine, they ring it up, and subtract a percentage off of the cases. If you are a regular, they might just apply it to the full purchase even if you didn't buy even count cases (say you bought two cases worth plus a couple bottles).

[edit: because I was curious I did a search for Screaming Eagle. While it is mostly only available at auction, I did find bottles from a wine shop in the UK. Cases of wine get 7% discount and orders over £2,500 get 10% discount, so there is nothing against you adding any wine they have to an order and getting the discount.]

In California, beer is sold in grocery stores. It is common for stores to offer a 30% discount if you buy 4 6-packs.

At my stores any singles smaller than 16.9oz go on the mix-a-six discount where each beer has an individual price and then gets an automatic discount (so any beer can be made a single, not just the ones that don't lose money in a $10 mix-6-pack). Anything 16.9 and larger gets an automatic 10% discount at 4 bottles, and 15% at 6 bottles.

Our computer system lets us do it this way, there are lots of Point of Sale systems out there that won't.
