I had FBS yesterday. Second time I've had this beer. Each time I get more of a caffeine buzz than alcohol. Does anyone else experience this? Is this normal for all coffee forward stouts. I'm thinking that if I drank a 4-pack, I'd be ready to hit the gym, mow the lawn, clean the house, and wash the car. All within 3 hours time.

Not me--would be on the couch. Check your liver. A four pack of that 8.3% treat has alcohol that far overpowers any caffeine in it. You were almost certainly legally drunk.

I think the 4 pack part was hypothetical.

OP - never noticed it myself, but I also drink a lot of coffee, so possibly that makes a difference. Are you a regular coffee drinker? I'm no sort of expert, but I would have thought that for the (relatively small) amount of caffeine in an FBS to be noticeable over the alcohol, you must be pretty sensitive to it.

I have two cups of coffee in the morning and the buzz I got from the one bottle of FBS was like drinking a cup of coffee. Didn't detect any alcohol. With that said, I'm not taking any chances of drinking an entire 4-pack. I think I'll drink one more and cellar the other two for a year or so and see what happens.

The amount of caffeine in a bottle of beer is far less than the amount in a cup of coffee.

"Breakfast Stout has 5-10% the caffeine of a cup of coffee, depending on the strength of the coffee."

Wake and Bake was the only stout that I noticed a Caffeine high vs Alcohol high. It could be psychosomatic though.

This has been discussed in prior posts before but a 12 oz coffee stout probably has no more than 25-50 mg caffeine. Per oz, that's less than some "decaf" coffee or green tea. Some are sensitive to just a few mg of caffeine and the time of day it's consumed may affect some more than others

I wish I could get that buzz. Then I could replace my morning coffee with BEER.

Only if it has chocolate in it. I doubt roasted barley produces any caffeine.

Placebo effect...I brew very coffee heavy stouts and still only put on average 3oz of coffee beans (cold pressed) into 5 gallons of stout. Maybe your synapses gave you that effect because of other factors you were experiencing while enjoying the stout? Could have been a sympathetic effect that was triggered by other exciting events while imbibing. Unless you are truly sensitive to trace amounts of caffeine.

I will 2nd this. I've had many stouts and coffee beers but Coffee Bender gave me a jolt late at night when I am usually ready for bed.

I just read that it's brewed with Sumatra and Kona coffee. When I was in Hawaii, Kona coffee gave me a cocaine like buzz. And I'm sure the Sumatra also leads to the effect. I may have to replace my morning Jamaican Blue Mountain with FBS.

Nothing here. I only drink one cup of coffee a day. When I am not drinking beer I am drinking lots of water. I drink no soda at all and though I love tea, I only drink decaf or herbal tea. Since I have very little caffeine at all, I feel like I'd get some sort of caffeine buzz from stouts but I don't. Perhaps the alcohol cancels it out on me

I don't get more of a caffeine buzz than alcohol... as there's more alcohol in FBS than caffeine... but certain coffee beers do give me a caffeine buzz in addition to a booze-buzz.

Obviously, this is going to be different with each individual and their genetic makeup/tolerance to coffee. There are coffee beers that will keep me up at night if I have them late in the evening.

I've never had any problems with FBS, but I literally cannot sleep after a 12oz bottle of Victory of Sea... if consumed late at night.

Maybe a more of a placebo-like response to knowing there is coffee in the beer? To repeat what most everyone else has said there is a small amount of caffiene in FBS and most coffee stouts. The mind is a wonderful and strange thing.

Any alcoholic beverage consumed within 2 hours of sleeping will keep you awake.

Not for me, although I am usually immune to caffeine from any source.
