Nice tunes! I grew up in a musical wasteland in south-central Washington state during the 80s, where top 40 was the only thing kids my age ever heard on the radio, and even then there were these whispers about how awesome Soundgarden was - and this was 3 or 4 years before anybody east of I-5 had heard of Nirvana.

    Wow just opened this one:

Didn't know a thing about it except the name and image on the bottle. Figured it was a nice smoked beer. Some smoke might come out as it warms but right now its an incredibly boozy stout. First sip was like taking a sip of bourbon.

I love me some Jackie O's though so no complaints!

I Drank My New Bock Saturday, Hence New Pale Ale Sunday
Spring huh? Feels like late November here. I guess after this winter it is about right. Anyone get a chance to see the Aurora Borealis (northern lights) caused by the solar storm, or the solar eclipse this week?
After Friday and Saturday, a low ABV beer was a welcome sight. Probably for my liver too. This one comes from my Carton distributer @HopBomb515. I think there are differing opinions on what constitutes a "session" beer. It tends to cover lower abv ipas, but many (brewers and drinkers alike) seem to think it has as much to do with being light/thin bodied (ie little to no malt base). I know they tend to go hand in hand, but I tend to think of them not just in ipa terms, but any lower abv beer. Edmund Fitzgerald comes to mind. I think it clocks in at 5.3%. To me, it is a go to beer when I want to crush a 6 pack or more without sacrificing flavor and not regret it for 2 days. Anyway, my experience so far with session ipas has resulted mainly in drain pours to meh. Here goes nothing.
    16 oz can. Good start.
Pours a very cloudy pale, straw yellow. Small, thin, bubbly white head.

Aroma is weak. Very faint faint cracker like smell with some slightly dank hops.

Taste is much better than I was expecting. Lots of citrus flavors. Grapefruit, mandarin orange, mango. Also some lemon that gives it a crisp tartness. Very balanced with a biscuit like breaded malt base. Smooth aftertaste.

A lot fuller bodied than you would expect for a 4.2% beer. Carbonation seems about right. Has some resin slickness
al after this and 077XX. This one isnt quite up there with Zombie Dust, Alpha King, Red Chair, or Dale's Pale as a straight up Pale Ale, but at 1.5-2% lower abv or more than every other, it is in a league of it's own. I would say 4.5+ if there were a sub 6% category. A very solid 3.9 for me. Cheers!

Onto my finishing pour now... A collaboration between Coronado and Devils Backbone...
This IPA features Centennial, Mosaic, and Northern Brewer hops...

Clean, light, bright, and tight - full of citrus and pale fruit, underscored by a lean malt bill... very nice...

    Cheers

    Deschutes - Fresh Squeezed IPA

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Good till June 10th 2015.

Deep amber red and bright crystal clear appearance. Looking right through this with hints of orange on the edges and nice creeping slow carbonation. Head is a nice simple tan, three to four fingers and has lots of staying power. Creamy top clumps and falls in on itself, with pill and fine soapy lacing. Great looker.

Hop action with a good mix of sweet caramel. Nice hints of mellow fruit and candy to tropical sweetness. A bit perfume like, perhaps floral but pushing a melon like quality a bit. Very soft aroma almost on the malt with mellow toffee and almost biscuit, but definitely with the hops on the front and forward. Strange sense of banana sundae like quality as well.

Real nice juiced palate. Light toasted malts accent through a good juicy and light body that makes the hops really come out. Tropical notes and melon seem to pop if so much burst with a juicy quality. Interesting that the toffee angle really takes a back seat but gives the sweetness to the hop tropics just wonderfully. Mild sense of mint and herbs on the finish as well, big yet very clean, even some tea softness.

While not a big whammo of hops or stunning, it's a great fun beer and I like the amber character to this which is sort of more supportive but giving much to the flavor. Another Deschutes winner for me.

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25 | BA Generated Score : 4.29

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Always love to get my hands on Deschutes, glad to have a sixer of this, that will probably take me into happy days for the coming week

    Greetings all,

For NBS, I've decided to break up a run of stouts with a sour--Allagash Nancy.

Pours a slightly hazy copper into my Teku with a frothy white had that quickly settles to a wisp and remains throughout.

Aroma of concentrated lemon juice (think little plastic lemons) and a hay-filled barn predominate. Some tart cherry appears toward the end.

Flavor is acetic and tart, reminiscent of citric acid, followed by the funkiness of Brett. Cherries do appear, bit they take a back seat to the citrus notes. Really, I'd describe this one as more tart/acetic than purely sour--there is a wine vinegar quality to the taste.

Mouthfeel is watery with very lively, prickly carbonation. Drying finish. That vinegary quality means that I can feel my teeth being stripped of their enamel.

Overall, I may have let this one sit for a bit too long. Cherries take a back seat for sure, and the Brett seems to have taken over a bit. But a fine sour as far they go. Cheers!

Greetings all from the great northwest.

Today it is Red Lantern IPA from Pelican Brewing, another in a long line of great Oregon breweries.

Red Lantern is a solid bitter caramel flavored IPA, not the summer hop bomb we'll be looking for soon.

Seasonal here in the Columbia Basin, mostly cloudy with temps in the low 60's. I have the brew kettle going this afternoon on the back deck. Still extract brewing because I'm satisfied with the results and don't want to spend all day on a batch of beer. It already takes an afternoon. But it's nice to be able to get the kettle outdoors on the gas burner. It;s a lot faster to boil than the kitchen stove.

Taking in the Gonzaga game in a few minutes, so until next time,

    Happy Trails!

Happy Sunday too everyone!!! Sorry I missed you all last week but duty calls. Another week come an and gone and another new beer for Sunday I spent a good portion of my afternoon brewing a new batch of beer (this one is actually for an upcoming competition sshhhh). I did a double batc this time me half is an ipa w/ some white peaches outa my yard and the other half will go in oak with Brett. Enjoyed a couple three of these while brewing reminding me why I love porters. Delicious I wish I got more than a case at my store. [IMG] Almost forgot a little music that brings me back a decade 15 ago in my heyday. Saw these guys at a festival in the Bronx

Busy weekend, going to sneak one in before calling it a day. Picked up this Oddside Ales single of Beautiful Disaster on a recent Michigan journey. A pale ale aged in red wine barrels with a abv. of 7.5.

Pours a reddish gold with almost no foam and minimal carbonation present.

Aroma is a pleasant fruitiness of grapes and perhaps some apple. A bit of hops try to emerge and a bit of oak.

Flavor is fruit forward, ripe red grapes, maybe a hint of sweet apple. There is a slight hop bite in the back.

Mouthfeel starts oily and finishes rather dry.

I took a gamble on a single at $5.99 for a twelve ounce and I'm glad I did. A very intriguing and complex beer that reveals something in every sip. I would definitely buy again if I come across. My rating came out to a 4.07, +0.7%.

    Have a great week gang!

Good evening fellow NBS-ers! Hope everyone is finding some tasty new bubs today!
My entry for today is one I found in the mix-a-six section at Wegman's on Thursday.
Much clearer and paler in body than I thought it would be; figured it would be a little more cloudy than it is.
    Sour aroma almost wine like.
Has that sour, tart flavor you would expect, but not picking up on any salt. Tasty and super drinkable.
That typical low abv (4.2%) for this style and lower carbonation makes this a decent beer.
Glad I could find this one after having the Blood Orange variant, which I thought was really tasty too!

    Cheers!

    New Double/Imperial IPA Sunday

Hello all! Chilly, but sunny here in Milwaukee. I heard that my family and friends back in New Jersey got some snow. I think I'm one of the few people who have residences in New Jersey and Wisconsin. Most people from Jersey have a second home in Florida - not Wisconsin. I don't even like the cold. Anyway, I do like good beer!
Today's selection is from Great Lakes - a WONDERFUL DIPA! If you can get it - get it! Juicy hops backed by delicious, smooth malt - A warning that the alcohol is noticeable and potent - Chillwave:

Back to back days having a brew from Neshaminy Creek!
This one poured out a beautiful dark orange body with a 1/2 finger head. Didn't leave much lacing in the glass.
Getting a ton of orange, pineapple and pine on the nose.
Taste matches the nose; sticky resinous hops with some nice sweetness on the back end.
Super refreshing beer. Can definitely see myself crushing a few of these quite often!
This is like NC County Line's cousin. Really nicely balanced beer.

    Cheers Big Ears!
