I've seen this on Rick Steve's Europe. We'll be in Salzburg June 15-17 and I definitely plan on spending some time there. We'll probably also do a Sound of Music tour. :flushed:

Thanks for the wealth of information! I will have to take some time to sift through it all, as I have little knowledge of how things work (transportation, rooming, distance between breweries...).

It's great to hear that biking is a viable option for getting around Bamberg and other smaller towns. It would be very cool to venture out to some of the smaller cities out in the country!

    Cheers!

For sure .... I borrowed a bike from my Inn-keeper last year while in Bamberg.... Stopped to sight-see at Schloß Seehof before moseying-on and hitting Göller in Drosendorf, Wagner and Hummel in Merkendorf, then Drei Kronen in Memmelsdorf. Back to town in time to hit Cafe Abseits... Great day!!

    Prosit!!

Everyone above has pretty much hit the important places... But another interesting resource that someone on this forum originally recommended (Sorry, I've forgotten who it was...) is http://www.mikrobrauer.com. It's a map with a very substantial number of local microbreweries shown by location. I find it quite useful if I am traveling around in unknown territory. Regardless, have a great stay, and if you run across any hidden gems, please let us know!

Oh and not to forget: in Munich, "little guy" Forschungsbrauerei has opened Marktschänke am Viktualienmarkt. The Viktualienmarkt is right in the heart of the tourist district.

Forschungsbrauerei itself is a pretty easy trek to make if you have a long-range S-Bahn pass. It's on your way to and from Aying, so it's a convenient side trip. Their St. Jacobus is one of the few year-round pale strong beers and it's delicious. Their export is probably the hoppiest traditional beer in the area, too.

To tinhorn's great list of places to hit I'll add Leipzig - it's a great little city and Gose is an interesting style that you really can't find outside of Leipzig in Germany. Also Bayerischer Bahnhof makes a pretty good Schwarzbier, though if I recall that's seasonal. Gosenschenke ohne Bedenken has a pretty nice beer garden too, and will serve the Gose mixed with various fruit juices, if that's your thing.

I didn't know where to post this otherwise (shhh... it's not really beer-related), but I think it belongs in the Germany forum. Anyone who has ever spent any time in Deutschland, or plans to...here is a German medical chart which should help you understand some quirky things which WILL come up. I've always laughed at the Kreislauf problems that many Germans have, but have never heard anyone else outside of Germany fall victim to it. Enjoy!

Related to "Föhnkrankheit", there seems to be a general fear of most moving air. Opening windows, use of fans, etc can all be met by some unspecified concern about illness. It's really strange.

You should definitely go to Forchheim for Annafest. It's a bit strange, but a real treat. And some excellent beers both from the Forchheim brewery and the surrounding district.

The two Bierkellers (by that I mean a garden) in Buttenheim are more than worth the slog up from the train station. And Windischeschenbach for Zoigl. Lovely beer, drunk literally in someone's back yard. And dead cheap.

If you can work out how to get there, Kathibräu in Aufess is just magical. As is Hofmann, where identical twin sisters are in charge - one the brewer, the other in the pub.

It has been just over a week since touching down in Munich and thought I would give a quick update.

We have hit most of the beergardens in the center city and are working through some of the gardens that are a bit out. Really enjoyed Ayinger and Andechs am domain as well as Augustiner brau. HB is a must as well as Englisher garden!

Went to Salzburg this past weekend and must say it was pretty incredible. The augustiner kloster is like nothing else! The perfect beergarden. Everybody is happy and enjoying the beer and company. The stiegl keller is not bad either! I highly recommend hiking both mountains. One has a beergarden at the top!

Possibly going to Andechs this weekend for the day. Ready to make the pilgrimage!

German beer culture is like nowhere else.

    Prost!
