Lately, I've been thinking a lot about what my favorite, go-to, East Coast style IPA is, and I think I've finally narrowed it down to Victory's HopDevil, followed by Peekskill's Eastern Standard.

Just to be clear, I am not talking about brewing location when saying "East Coast"; I'm talking about an IPA style featuring a malt backbone, with presence and complexity, that supports the hoppiness of the beer. * Also, not including big VT style DIPAs in this either.

What's your go-to when you need a break from the crisp citrusy goodness of the West Coast style?

    * Not trying to debate the existence of this style.

I assume your not including the big boy DIPA's from VT, MA, etc.

There is some debate as to whether SofS is considered a DIPA or IPA. If you consider that an IPA then it is my choice, if not, see below:

My go-to choices would be Stoneface IPA or Finest Kind. Both are great, reliable, easy to get. Finest Kind may win because it comes in 12 packs.

I get lost these days with West Coast, East Coast, Vermont-style etc etc

My favourite Brooklyn-style IPA is Other Half Hop Showers

If you mean a more malty restrained beer like Two-Hearted, 60 Minute, and Crooked Tree. Then yeah any of those I just mentioned.

I pretty much only drink New England style IPAs (Mass/VT/ME mainly) which i would not describe as west coast in any way and is what I think east coast is becoming.

I suppose if I had to select one it would be HopDevil.

Below is something I posted previously:

"A number of US brewed IPAs have a noticeable malt backbone: Victory HopDevil, Sierra Nevada Celebration, Southampton Burton IPA, Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA, Deschutes Inversion, …."

    Cheers!

This made me realize I dont drink many East Coast brews. Mainly the Midwest to the West.

Dogfish Head is only East Coaster that I drink consistently. But I dont choose just one of their IPAs so I will just say any of them.

You're not trying to debate the existence of a style, yet the style isn't recognized on BA, so wouldn't that in essence create a debate in regards to whether or not a specific IPA can be classified as such?

Love the Eastern Standard. Always forget about it too, but it's great.

If we're eliminating the northeast stuff from this equation (HF, Tree House, Alchemist, Trillium, etc.), I'd have to go with the homer pick and choose a couple of fine DIPAs that DC Brau is putting out: On the Wings of Armageddon and Solar Abyss (which are essentially the same beer with different hops).

While I assume you think you're being clear, it's really not. When someone says "east coast IPA", malty is actually the last thing I think about. Maybe if this was 10 years ago and DFH was the definition of east coast IPA?
