New one for me...a birthday beer. Smell - french toast, vanilla ice cream, cinnamon, chocolate...amazing complexity. Taste - spice, vanilla, chocolate cake, blackberries, cherries, coconut, rye, and a lot of dream come true. Mouthfeel is amazing - thick, viscous, gooey. Overall, an amazing beer. Makes me want to live in Chicago.

Here's my 2nd and last new brew of today, Abita's Bourbon Street Maple Pecan Nut Brown Ale: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3/154121/?ba=bluejacket74

I used to keep away from Abita brews, but over the past half year or so I've liked the bombers that I've tried from them so I figured I'd pick up this one too:

I think it's worth grabbing a bottle if you've never had it before. I don't remember the price of this, but I thought it was a good value just to try this one at least once.

I'll have to check on here later today or tomorrow morning to see everyone else's new beers. Happy NBS everyone!

Taking advantage of a long weekend to catch up on some chores around the house, but as the sun sets, it's time for a new beer. This one comes to me thanks to @egrace84 and my first from Potosi. This is their Tangerine IPA.

As the name suggests, there is a ton of tangerine. The aroma hits you in the face as soon as it's opened. Very enjoyable IPA. Not something I would want everyday, but this is a nice twist on an IPA and worth a try if you get a chance.

    Cheers!

Well, this has been a shroomy kind of day. I posted earlier in my regular Sunday thing about my son finding this Sparassis Radicata (Cauliflower Mushroom) in the woods behind his house. This in it's natural setting, in the kitchen, and the incredible soup that Martha devised. This mushroom is like a really cool meaty beauty.

My college freshman daughter decided at the last minute to come home for part of the holiday weekend. Shifted my planned grilled pork loin dinner from Labor Day to today so we could all enjoy. As a side, I made my Belgian Wit-braised shredded cabbage. I used Cigar City Florida Cracker, which until recently I didn't realize was a Wit! Good beer, but not my favorite of the style.

Back from the pool and making crepes for dinner.

This ones awfully good too. Clean copper body and a fresh aroma of spicy hops and breach malts. The flavor follows with lots of caramel malts, but a solid dose of spicy hops keeps everything in check. Full review to follow.

My new beer today is Golden Nugget from TG. This smells and looks like a well made IPA. Very fruity. Nice off white head that settles but does not disappear. And it tastes pretty much like it looks and smells. Tasty.

Happy to be back to NBS from a 2 week absence due to moving. So, I found my very first local brew, at a health food store.
    so here goes...

    New American IPA Sunday
    Dirty Dog IPA 7.1% ABV
    Big Dog Brewing

Pours a nice reddish color, figure it is part amber. Lacing is very pretty, especially as you swish the glass around. Nose is quite hoppy, a fresh squeeze of grapefruit, almost reminds me of very fresh Swami's IPA. First sip, very similar to that of a west coast IPA. It is quite malty but you do get some citrus and you can taste the combo of hops. Not bad. It gets 110 here so, one of these perfectly chilled is a good treat. One thing I did notice, the 7.1% seemed to hit me a bit more than when I was in San Diego gulping 9.0% down on sunny days. I wonder if the dry weather or altitude has affected that in any way? haha, who knows, this was enjoyable and I can't wait to find more local brews in a new town.

    cheers!

A tip o' the cap to my NBS brethren. After 3 hours of flight delays today, back in Mankato after a trip to South Bend for ND/Texas. This is one of 4 beers I brought back from these guys. Three Floyd's gets tons of love (rightfully so), and 18th Street does some world-class stuff, but Bare Hands is approaching that league. Seek them out - they're legit.

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

Look: classic IPA, with a golden amber hue, a bit murky, and 1+ fingers of slightly off-white head.

Smell: the spices really mask the hops, and the citrus spices are a bit muted.

Taste: this is where all the elements in this beer come together. The palm sugar and lemon grass hit up front, and then you get shop bite - and the ginger spice closes the show. It's big, it's a bit juicy - and it's refreshing. That's tough to pull off all at once, IMHO.

Feel: for lack of a better term, it feels like an IPA. Bright, but rounded a bit by the spices.

Overall: a beer nerd buddy in Indiana raved about this, so when I was in town for the ND/Texas game, I had to check these guys out. $75 later, I had this gem to mule back to Minnesota (plus three other beers). I had high expectations - and this beverage exceeded them. Very well done.

I'm not sure what the base beer for this was. I've never seen it in Ohio, I bought this at Keg Liquors in Clarksville, IN and I think it was in the upper $20's/low $30's for a bottle if I remember correctly. I'll have to check my old receipts just to make sure, but I don't think this one was cheap.

So I'm back today, with a nice dessert beer...

    MILF from Mother's Brewing

The label says that this is brewed with raisins and cacoa nibs and then aged in rum, sherry, bourbon, brandy, and whiskey barrels. So quintuple barrel stout?
    Onto the review...

Pours pitch black with no head.

Smell is big on dark fruit and barrel character and sweetness. The booze lingers on the back end.

Taste begins with sweet candied dark fruit, moving into a showcase of barrels. One second is toasted oak and vanilla, the next its sweet, boozy brandy notes, and then onto rich sherry notes. Finishes back with some candied dark fruit mixed with vanilla and caramel and a nice booze warmth that just pops up at the finish.

    Mouthfeel is creamy and rich.

Overall a great beer. A little on the sweet side, but overall a nice balance between all of the barrels they use.

Probably my last post for the night, but I will enjoy reading what everyone else has to say about their beers.

    Cheers!

Well, we have made it to Sunday evening. A very nice day, hot, but nice. Had some grilled turkey burgers and sweet corn on the grill tonight. Enjoying a nice evening beer while not really thinking about anything other than this very moment. It's rather relaxing.

    Wicked Weed Brettaberry.
A - Hazy sunset orange with pink highlights and a fluffy 2 finger bright white head. Thick cap and lacing on the glass.

S - Aromas of berries and some zesty tartness. Hints of yeast, wet straw and grass funk along with some jammy notes.

T - Starts out with the tartness of the three berries used. Difficult to differentiate between each berry, but they are all there. Yeast along with the wet straw and grass funk are mild and delicate but complement the other flavors will. I really like the berry notes.

M - Light, and refreshing with prickly carbonation. It is wonderfully dry and slightly tart on the finish.

O - Another tasty Saison from WW that has a very nice berry flavor.

That looks yummy! We are supposed to have them here, but I have yet to find. We get g. frondosa and hericium, but would love to find a cauliflower mushroom. Hope to go out tomorrow as we just found a young, and hypomyces-free, b. edulis at my friends house and I have another spot usually has em.

Do you know the top 3 lies of Mushroom pickers?
-I don't know any good spots, lets go to yours
    -Of course I have permission.
-Not a thing. How about you?

Bare Hands is definitely legit. I have to head over to that side of the state for work all the time. When I have to stay overnight, bare hands has become my go to when in the area.

You do realize that you are now never allowed to miss a NBS, right? If you do, there will easily be 50-100 @LeperJim tags in the thread asking your whereabouts.

Now up my first home brew with fruit. A session IPA brewed peaches, only 3.8% ABV!

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass

A- Super hazy golden straw color with a small white head 3.75

S- Tart peaches, hints of topical fruits and mangos, citrus, touch of pine. 4.25

T- Tart peaches, peach skins, nice piney finish, light malt backbone, some citrus/grapefruit, faint tropical fruits. 4.25

    M- Smooth, light, crisp. 4

O- I am very happy with how this turned out. Peaches really help this beer, think I might use less bittering hops and be a little more heavy handed with the mosaic and citra hops towards the end of the boil. 4.25

    Rating 4.20

    NBS, part III

Victory DirtWolf Double IPA - Victory Brewing Company, Downingtown PA

    4.45/5 rDev +3.7%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

This beer looks more like a light lager than a Double IPA: pale gold in color, crystal clear and very effervescent. It pours to a lasting giant pillowy ivory-colored head that would look right at home on a lager as well; lacing consists of very nice rafts and ladders. The nose puts any doubts about what it is to rest: the aroma shows as a fairly intense, smooth, seamless, soapy melange of citrus, pine and florals, joined by pineapple and alcohol overtones. Up front, the palate is bitter resinous pine and citrus, with a nice balancing view of the light bready malt foundation emerging mid-palate, joined on the back end by significant floral and alcohol notes. The finish is a bit astringent, a bit malty and a bit floral/pine, all joined in seconds by a style-moderate clinging hoppy bitterness; the pine/floral notes and the bitterness linger for a few minutes. Mouthfeel is biggish for the light body, and peppery from the very fizzy carbonation. This is a very drinkable, very well-balanced Double IPA that hides its alcohol pretty well. (1,046 characters)
