    (cheat) last night, a new one: Vic Secret single hop session ale, from Iron Bird - a first for me to try this new Australian hop (Vic Secret, on its own), and the result is a super-bright, light, pineapple aroma pale ale. Doesn't have much of a mid-palate impact (probably need some malt backbone added) but quite interesting. Looked like a hefe (pale/turbid yellow), drank like a light session (5.0% abv). Nice to see this new brewery do something different.

    Mornin' BA's & happy Saturday! Right around 10 here in drizzly NOVA & I'm starting my day with this:

    It's OK. Nothing like it's big brother, not even close.

    Alright folks, it's Saturday. You know what that means...time for the 4th(?) installment of BA Anime Saturday! An ongoing project that I've undertaken for no good reason & that nobody seems to care about one way or the other :stuck_out_tongue::grinning:

    Today's selections are planetary in theme:



    These were both in pretty heavy rotation in the early days of Saturday Anime. The Venus Wars is more of a story in two acts, the first act being actually rather well-thought-out & engaging, the second act being cliched garbage.

    Most seem to be going coffee this AM. I decided it was more of a tart/fruit kinda day. Thinking of better weather - as this rain is preventing me from 3 straight weekend morning walks. Perennial Pineapple Kumquat Berliner Weisse:

    Funky tart hit my nose as I was pouring it - smells like a funky farmhouse - the fruits are mingled in there. The initial pour was quite clear, although it seems to have hazed up slightly - even after wiping off some condensation. Quite tart, and I can maybe get some kumquat in that, but the pineapple tries fairly successfully to hide. Nice beer, bolder on the tart/sour but reminds me a little of DFH Festina Peche in the backbone and feel of the beer - light, crisp, some bitterness behind the sour - with fairly heavy prickly carbonation.

    Hey again BA's! Now a bit after 10:30 here in NOVA & I think I need a second Raja - y'know, for scientific research & whatnot:

    Really wish I had the 'Maha' version on hand to do a side-by-side. I can say that this brew isn't nearly as malty or dense feeling. The color is significantly lighter & the flavors are a bit loose/harsh compared to what I can recall about the Maha.
    This brew has a solid bitterness to it, although it's lacking in any kind of clear flavor direction. The citrus components imply Pine-Sol rather than actual lemon/lime/grapefruit etc. The super-soapy mouthfeel does nothing to help the situation. It finishes piney...but not what I'd call a 'good' piney. I'd argue that the real bright spot here is a very solid implication of refined honey on the mid palate, something I wasn't expecting but I'm definitely enjoying.
