Grimm of the Future

They've canned several IPA's (Afterimage, Pulse Wave, Tesseract, Cloudbusting), but as far as I know, that distro has been limited to the NYC area and the cans have been increasingly difficult to track down without a fair amount of good timing and fortune.

 

Limited IPA/DIPA cans and kegs make it upstate as well, but no distro outside of NY State.

EDIT: I actually remember Tesseract being on draft at Row 34 in Boston when I was there a month ago. Not sure how common that is, though...maybe there was an event one night?

 

Some of the non-hoppy stuff is distributed by Shelton Bros. to random places around the country, basically at Shelton's whim. So that's why it shows up in DC (and other places). However, the beer is brewed at Beltway Brewing so check their social media because occasionally they'll put some, including hoppy, stuff on tap for fills.

 

what @sean008 said. we're brewing at both beltway and flagship currently. The only source for IPA's near DC is going to be Beltway growler fills, which go on maybe once a month.

Just got tapped at Good Beer in the East Village.

 

Lumen was also on tap at Lupulo today.

 

Super Spruce bottles at Bravo in Astoria - $10.99/bottle

Still had 6 or 7 left.

 

Never had any of the bottled Grimm beer. but it is contract brewed by Beltway Brewing in Sterling, VA. What I have had has been magnificent.

 

Not to get into a debate over terminology, but we don't consider our beer to be "contract brewed" because we directly oversee the brewing of every single batch. it's a lot of road trips but it's worth it.

 

Has anyone had problems with bars mislabeling Lumen? While I wasn't there for any of these instances, my friend did send me pictures of the beer he was served and I trust his beer sense.

Called Rattle n Hum West and they told me they still had Lumen. Arrived, ordered, and I'm positive they gave me Super Spruce but since I had never tried Lumen, didn't press them since I didn't see Super Spruce on the menu.

Convinced I had received the wrong beer, tried Valhalla in Hells Kitchen the next day. Ordered Lumen at the bar, what they served was pretty dark and clearly had a ton of crystal malt in it. Giving benefit of the doubt and it was a mistake, requested a taster of Lumen from a different bartender and watched as they poured from a tap with a Grimm logo on it. Taster was exactly the same as the beer I had previously, clearly not Lumen.

At this point I was pretty frustrated, so I went over to Lupulo on 29th. Ordered Lumen and to my excitement, it was exactly what I was expecting and aligned with the other Grimm IPAs I've had. Once I had the actual beer, I knew for sure the previous 2 weren't even close.

 

I've had problems in this regard at these places before, but not specifically with Grimm.

 

Wow, that's messed up! I had Lumen at Rattle n Hum West on Friday and it was definitely what I was expecting. I guess they've since changed the keg (and failed update the menus or tell the bartenders). Pretty lame.

 

Happened to me at Rattle N Hum West when they had Cloudbusting. Perhaps it's a tap cleanliness issue there. It tasted off to me so I asked the bartender once after the pour and he confirmed it was Cloudbusting, but didn't want to push the issue after that.

 

I had Lumen when first tapped according to Beer Menus (and topped off with BCBCS and Regal) at Rattle N Hum West last week and everything tasted as it should (Lumen was delicious).

 

Crown Inn in Crown Heights has Lumen on the board as Grimm Citra IPA...

I posted this before, but Hogshead Tavern in Harlem has it on. They got two kegs and that place rocks. Definitely worth checking out.

 

On a positive note, Beer Authority has both Lumen and Super Spruce on tap. While I like Lumen, Super Spruce was a cooler experience since it's the first gose I actually really like.

 

After running over to Bitter and Esters today I passed by Prospect Heights Beer Works and they have bottles of Super Spruce @ $12.99. Maybe 6 on the shelves.

 

While we were at Sea Witch yesterday, drinking Lumen side by side with Harlan and Lunch, it occurred to us that NYC might be the best city in the world to drink hoppy beer in right now.

 

It's either NYC or Waterbury.
