I've been enjoying Atwater Winter Bock this year, it is very good. They also have a year round Doppelbock called Voodoo Vator, and their spring seasonal Maibock should be out soon. Both are good, IMO. They recently introduced a new Imperial Bock called Tunnel Ram, I have not tried it yet.

That is a lot of Bocks. I think Atwater distributes to many state, does anyone outside Michigan see these?

I remember really enjoying Anchor Bock, which sadly was discontinued. I haven't been able to find a reasonable facimile on shelves anywhere.

This is my favorite cheap option...even though it's really the old Genny Red from what I've been told...

Rust Belt & upper midwest/great lakes region is the land for such heritage. Sadly, Kansas isn't having it apparently:slight_frown:

I hear ya, & sadly IMO Rogue has done their solid beers NO FAVORS with their Pepto Bismal/Sriacha nonsense & gimmicky beers. Personally, I find Dead Guy, Shakespeare, & Hazelnut to be solid & readily available.

I think the reason for Kansas being so boring culturally is that it was really underpopulated for a long length of time. MOdern conveniences made it too easy for small towns to die off, people to move to other places and lose touch with their parents/grandparents culture, and the fact that the only major town until 50 years ago was Kansas City - a town that saw a lot of immigration and quickly lost touch with its German heritage. Prohibition didn't help, either. Oh, and the whole WWI Anti-German sentiment I think was stronger here than where there were larger German populations around the Great Lakes.

Many years ago one local brewery, either Hudepohl or Schoenling always had a Bock beer out right around Easter. I remember it as being crisp and flavorful dark beer. No malt sweetness up front. One of the few beers I enjoyed back then.

The Schoenling has turned into the "traditional" beer brewed for the Cincinnati BockFest - in quotes because it's not an actual standing recipe, but the winner of the previous year's bock homebrew competition, produced just for BockFest.

That line-up made for a fun Tuesday evening a couple weeks ago. An enjoyable flight for sure!

I don't drink Bocks often because I prefer other styles, but I do enjoy them every now and again, especially Schell's (gotta show my hometown brewery some love )

The Winter Wheat is characteristic of the bock...but a touch more sweetness. I too miss the bock.

I can't stand bocks because when I think of the ones I have had I think of a syrupy, sweet, dark beer, that's just gross. There are plenty here in Germantown, Pittsburgh, P.A. Penn Brewery carries several that I might not have had.

Honestly, i dont think "Bock" is a real style.

When Germans refer to a Bock,it's as a short form for Doppelbock.

    Only distinction is between

Doppelbock (served in Autumn/Winter,high ABV,dark in colour)
Maibock (served in Spring, lighter in colour and abv than Doppelbocks)
and Heller Bock (Pale colour, abv varying from medium to high abv)

Interesting, would this explain why I can hardly find any German beers that just call themselves bocks?

I love Bocks, of all kinds....saddened that Anchor dropped theirs last year, as did Yuengling.....

The big "Bock Fest" held in Cincy next weekend is the largest of its kind in the US - http://www.bockfest.com/beer/

The style is not that popular due to the proliferation of all thing "hops", IPA's DIPA's etc etc...sad

i'm with you. we'll catch flak on here, but to be honest the shelves speak for themselves.....no one cares about german styles anymore besides gose.
