Flying Dog Dead Rise Old Bay Summer Ale.
Dead Rise is a type of boat used for crabbing in the Chesapeake Bay. Old Bay is a mix of spices used on crabs and fish. I didn't expect to like this beer but it turned out to be pretty nice. This brew is very pale gold and light bodied. The Old Bay spine is in both the aroma and flavor but it's not strong just little more than a hint. The finish is day. A good summer beer that would go well with crabs.

    Epic Brewing Big Bad Baptist
    [IMG]
A: Solid unpenetrable black. Slight mocha head decent lacing. 4.25
S: Coffee presents upfront with a chocolate undertone. Notes of vanilla and a slight presence of booze. 4.5
T: Follows the nose closely. The coffee strikes the perfect balance between being too subtle and completely overpowering the other flavors which I find happens in some beers. The only nitpick I have here is that I would like to see the cocoa nibs separate themselves a bit more from the other flavors. 4.75
F: Medium thickness, creamy and with little carbonation. 4.0
O: This is a fantastic offering. It is so easy to go wrong when using coffee or aging in barrels, but this nailed it on all fronts. There is a hint of alcohol present which is just enough of a reminder that this is a hefty beer and you shouldn't go at it too fast. 4.5

    Composite: 4.54 Average: 4.31 rDev: +5.3%

Of my two offerings this week, this is definitely what I should have chosen for my after midnight beer. This is the perfect beer for those long cold nights where you want something strong and slightly boozy to cap everything off. This holds up well to some of the more hyped similar beers as quite honestly I'm enjoying this more than I enjoyed KBS, though you can't go wrong either way.

Working on getting there myself right now. I had a lot of fairly high alcohol beers last night, so I won't be cracking into one today until at least noon.

I give the Westy an edge over the Rochefort, but agree they both blow Abt 12 out of the water. I'd put Pannepot above Abt 12, too.

For me, the Westy was a YOLO type treat I got while in Belgium. I don't know that if go out of my way to get it here unless desperate for the tick.

Greetings, fellow NBSers, and thanks to @cavedave for getting us underway,

Sunny day this AM in the city that is today overrun with “Bloomies” who were out carb-loading last night. I was carb-loading too, but not to run a race. Saturday morning at midnight I had to go to work, so I slept the early afternoon away, then went to the second day of festivities for Iron Goat’s official grand opening for their new location, about 10 minutes walk from my home (they did their soft open about 3 weeks ago). While there, I had myself several glorious beers, such as their Manito Triple IPA, their Goatnik RIS that was aged in Dry Fly whiskey barrels, a barrel aged version of their wee heavy, a guest tap from Wander (a dubbel) and Iron Goat’s Lemon Gose, brewed as a collaboration between them and Everybody’s Brewing. Superbly drinkable. Although not officially new (I first had it about a month ago), last night I was the first reviewer of it, so I’ll toss it up here:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29334/227488/?ba=woemad#review

Last weekend I was visiting family in my hometown of Kennewick, WA, and stumbled across a couple beer treasures on Monday. At an Albertson’s there, I found Fremont’s First Nail and a couple bottles from Trickster’s, a brewery in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho that only just started bottling. I can’t find their bottles outside of the brewery in the Spokane area, but there they were at this chain grocery store 150 miles away. Here’s a review of Trickster’s Juice Box:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30743/217452/?ba=woemad#review

Perhaps the “dankest” IPA I have ever had.

Oh, and on my way out of town, I stopped at a local bar that is probably the best source of draught craft beer in the area, and finally got to try Bottomcutter, a beer I’d been wanting to have for a year:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30743/217452/?ba=woemad#review

Quite a few choices on deck here, today, so I’ll be back when I figure out what I’m kicking off with.

Good afternoon to all the NBS followers and thanks to @cavedave for the great send off as usual. Been a whirlwind week here in central NH. There was a break in at the neighbors house and 2 days later they hit ours. But thanks to the little guy pictured in my avatar they didn't have any success and actually were caught at the hospital a couple hours later being treated for the dog bites they got. The good new is that Diesel's cuts from the glass in the French door they broke were minor and he is doing fine.
Then on to some happy stuff we have a pair of Robins that are nesting in our trumpet vine this spring and are hoping that they are able to raise there brood in peace.
Not a great picture but if you look close in the center there is a dark eye and head with a little red underneath.
Now on to the important things for today and my New Beer for today. Friday found me in Burlington VT. and after my obligations were met I had time to stop at Burlington Beer Co. and pick up a few beers. These guys to me are making some great beers and most of there BA stuff has been really good. But on to my new beer for today and it is Surfing Waves of Dopamine.

This beer is called a Saison and pretty well fills that bill IMO.
This beer pours a slightly cloudy yellowish color.(the photo doesn't do well for the color of this beer)
The nose is tart and crisp and has the little bit of funk you get from the saison yeast used in this beer.
The taste is the wonderful flavor of the saison yeast that give the beer that nice tart taste with the little bit of funk in the back of the mouth.
The mouth feel is crisp and clean not much lingering after taste.
To me this is a nice take on a saison and I hope to be able to enjoy this beer many more times as the warmer weather takes over for the summer.

    New American IPA Sunday...

...and it's a good one! That's what turns a cold rainy Sunday, and $XX (the XX means it was pricey but not worth the exchange) lunch out, into another good day. A good IPA to chase the blahs: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/33326/122204/?ba=NiceTaps#review

    A good pic, too:

It's a good thing that I was enjoying that new beer earlier today because the food service was s l o w.
It's the new beer that counts today so all is well.

This immediately came to mind after noticing the 20ish year old hostess sporting mom jeans. They can't be making a comeback, can they?:grimacing::astonished::stuck_out_tongue:

A chance to use my Lone Pint nonic properly is always welcome, and 667 Neighbor of the Beast is tasty. At first it smells like an English pale ale, very fruity and sweet with some bread malt, but the first few sips, while fruity sweet up front, contain little hop bombs that explode into bitterness as the swallow ends through the aftertaste. This sucker's bitter ... tastes like pine tar at times. But like Lone Pint does, no one note takes over. It's really sweet at times, really bitter at others, like candied orange and sweet bread dough, then chased by bitter pine.

    The review:

Great beer. It mostly avoids the caramel flavor many American IPA/DIPAs get, which is nice for me, but like Lone Pint's Yellow Rose, it does a lot of malt flavor dance around with the hops.

    Cheers!

This pours a very murky golden color. The head is frothy, and sticks around. The nose is very delicious wheat smell. It also seems a bit citrusy. The taste is got the standard wheat flavor. It is also got a slight citrus taste, that I got in the nose. Delicious.

I wish I would have gotten more than a 6 pack yesterday in New Ulm. At least I have reason to go there every once in a while, because my widowed aunt lives there, and a lot of family buried in Home Township in the family cemetery.

I've always found WB Gose to completely lack in subtlety and nuance. Good beer but wildly overrated. So much drinkability is lost due to the utter sourness. I've heard good things about Old Pro and will need to try it one of these days.

L-The beer pours a deep cola brown made reddish by the passage of light through it. The head is off white and one finger in height. This fades into a thin film leaving patchy lacing on the glass.
S-Dark fruits and malts initially. A whiff of black licorice mixed in.
T-Dark fruits, no licorice thankfully as it's not my favorite, and no alcohol. Feels kind of like a sanitized version of a dubbel. Unfortunately it doesn't have a lot of character to make me want to keep drinking it.
F- Mouthfeel is medium to medium light. Carbonation is light.
O- This dubbel is certainly drinkable. What it isn't is memorable. There are many better alternatives out there, especially among imported Belgians.

Good afternoon NBS, starting my day with an IPA "from the future", Parageusia 47. According to Tired Hands the Parageusia series are beers from the future with the recipes given to them by some weird artsy guy from the future. I find the whole idea stupid and a little annoying, but the beers are good so I buy it.

500 ml bottle poured into flute

A- A hazy golden straw with a large fluffy white head.

S- Some barnyard funk, floral, lemon/citrus, hints of the tropical fruits you get from mosiac hops, faint oak. Definitely different.

T- Wheat, citrus, floral, some nice barnyard funk, some mango, slightly tart, some oak, complex and a little strange.

M- Smooth, light to medium body.

O- Comprared to Para 1 and 2 this is a let down, but it works as a farmhouse IPA. Enjoyable but $16/bottle seems too high.

Hopefully this weeks picture is not sideways. Don't know what happened. Anywho...

I've passed on this beer in the past month or so because I've heard unpopular things. I finally cracked and bought a single. Pours a muddled brown, with a short lived head. Sweet smelling, caramel, dates. Taste is caramel, nutty, dried figs and dates, a little bit of molasses. The barrel and bourbon characteristics are just about non existent. Almost nothing and it's at the finish. That's a bummer for me. Thin bodied doesn't help. However, it is very drinkable for a bba beer.

Overall, glad I only bought 1 bottle and not sure it was a good buy at this price.
