Good morning BAs! Well, it's still kind of dark here as the sun futilely attempts to burn through the Jovian clouds and the freezing drizzle. Day of the dark indeed. Something a bit lighter is indicated for breakfast:

This is an extra I picked up some time ago for a potential NBS BIF, but my victim had already had it so back into storage for a later cleanup detail. Not as dark as I'd like, but then I don't feel the need to compete any more. YOU DAMN KIDS, GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

For the Day of the Dark

    Mornin'

I don't often get the time on Saturday morning to have a beer with breakfast, but today I'm not going anywhere until we're finished with some light rain melting the sheet of ice left by an earlier round of sleet and freezing rain.

The beer in my glass is a Great Lakes Ohio City Oatmeal Stout and since I'm not big on photography I'll be "painting" a word picture based in large part on updating and revising my review of the first bottle I had of this beer a few weeks back.

The beer pours out into a Duvel glass a dark brown, almost black, color with a 1/2" dark tan head that soon recedes to a ring of foam and a thin layer covering the surface of the liquid. There are two or three larger islands of foam floating on the liquid. Sipping creates a sheet of foam that mostly slides back down to the liquid but leave a couple of arches and scattered speckles of lacing. Some foam persists for quite a while.

The aromas seem dominated by coffee but include some dark chocolate. There's also a light, almost burnt, dark roast smell and what seems to be a touch of cream in the background.

The flavors pretty much follow what I'd expect from the nose, but with the dark chocolate and some sweetness more up front while the coffee, dark roast and some bitterness fill the background.

The mouthfeel is on the full side of medium bodied, with a creamy texture that is only very slightly prickly with the light but persistent carbonation. The fairly long finish begins as the chocolate sweetness moves to the background allowing some roasted dry bitterness to show. The roof of the mouth and back of the palate take on an almost chalky feel that goes on for a fairly long time.

For my tastes, this is a very good oatmeal stout and a keeper that I'll be looking to have more of this year and will include on my "buy again" list for future years. A well made beer worth seeking out.

As a counter point to the Winter music provided by @dcotom, here is another Winter, with the performers dressed appropriately for the Day of the Dark.

First off. Thanks to @LeperJim for another year of celebrating the winter solstice.
I had intended to crack open a "dark" brew from @2beerdogs for this fine themed occasion, but this beer from @ovaltine has been lurking in the shadows and haunted my dreams throughout the night.

And what a phenomenal beer it is. The best rye whisky stout I have had hands down. #properglassware even thanks to my BIF friend. (although it is so highly reflective it's impossible to photograph unless you are @impending)
But what about the cellar beer?

I dare you to argue with this logic

Remember, this year in the event of a tie the most RECENT post wins! The rationale for this is: more likes in a shorter period of time. Take any grievances up with The Duvel at 555-666-FU6X.

A 3 or 4 way tie is not desired. Please don't do that.

    Very Early Re-cap:

At 6:00am WBAYDN #1519 is activated.

    In the beginning...

    @utopiajane is awake...

    6:50am

@lordofthewiens summons the dark eerie specter of Santa Claus. Candlelight. Deep poetry. "Nothing but Now" We're not worthy. ...have we already peaked at the first post of the day?

    Hell no!

@DoctorZombies serves up some 6:47am Damnation and (Sean Connery vocal) "THE GAME ISH ON!!!"

@tolar111 taunts and holds back the nudity this year, but the Day is young...

Tip: Nudity generally works when deployed early enough.

@thebeers is seeing stars and snow with a damn near perfect early morning post by his wood with some epic music. (I'm not a Deadhead but I enjoyed that 30 minute performance on this dark morning.)

@dcotom is not outshined by the darkness and celebrates -40 wind chills with the first IPA of the Day! Yay!!!

@DoctorZombies throws down another at precisely 40 minutes after his first offering and sends things into eternal Darkness!! Positioning himself to win first AND second place awards! Didn't see that comin'!!!

@superspak ...a big winner in last years DotD delivers a 1, 2, 3, 4 dark punch in signature superspak style. Opeth, The Drapery Falls, a spectacular musical selection is a confident choice and...ominous!

Note: I just checked and Vegas money is on superspak again this year!

Up in the booth, DotD historians excitedly announce that the first seven beer posts are DotD inspired and is A RECORD for this annual WBAYDN event!

At 7:32am Mork and Mindy make an unexpected appearance.

    So...

I'm sitting here this morning in my fortified WulverDen, minding my own business, writing this friendly update on my iPad, when just like last year, my lovely wife starts asking me questions:

    "Jim! What are you doing?"
    "Huh? I'm..."
    "We have shopping to do!"
    "But Honey, I gotta..."
    "We have gifts to wrap!
"Honey, today is The Day of..."
"We're going to a Christmas luncheon at 1:00!"
    "What!? WTF!!!! Nobody told m..."
"Then we have to get the IKEA dresser put together."
"I'm not fucking doing that again.
    "MOVE IT!"
    "Wow, you're mean."

    Hopefully another update coming later!

The final "Likes" tally ends tomorrow at noon! Awesome posts Gang of the Now!

    Cheers!

I awoke this morning with a start and like Poe, deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before - did I have a dark to celebrate The Day of the Dark?

Being the Ill-prepared sort that I am, I tried to conjure inspiration from the darkest philosopher I could imagine, Nietzsche. But when I gazed long into the abyss hoping to find an Abyss all I found was the abyss gazing back into me.

Having no match, I stumbled about in the dark with an unlit candle, cursing both. I had all year to prepare. There had to be something. The dark corner of my crawlspace pulled me toward it with the force of a black hole and then out of the darkness all was revealed.

Would I curry @LeperJim favor or wrath being a copy(black)cat? It was black and white.

All the way from Canada, one of the best Kolsh beers I've ever had. The addition of peach is a great idea and goes very well with all the other Kolsch flavors.

Why does the Day of the Dark always start with an evil cat around here??

And why does light always seem to get swallowed?

Is it what arises from the cellar...
    from the depths...
    of my past...
    from...

Thanks for all that you do to make this such a great event!

My tip is to do the dresser by yourself, in a closed off room, and say it takes a really. Really. Long. Time.
