I don't have a lot of experience with the style but Notch Brewing makes a couple of (brewery only) milds that blew me away with how flavorful and rich they were for 4% ABV beers. Especially the dark mild.

I'd love to see more of them around.

No one seems to make them with any regularity where I live, but my favorite one-offs were the November 22nd, 1838 and February 22nd, 1945 X Ale historical recreations by the late, lamented Pretty Things.

    Perhaps you've heard of them.

Sigh, we don't have any around here. I posted a similar thread recently and got a pretty much "You're SOL where you live" response.

Still looking at getting up to Philly for a weekend to smuggle some Yards back down South. Hey can y'all do me a favor and yell at their brewers to send their brews down the coast some? Y'all are the city of brotherly love, id love y'all to hook a brother up!

It is already 'done'. According to the Yards beer finder their beers are in NOVA. How far is that for you?

NOVA is about 3-5 hours away from me in places...it's actually quicker for me to drive to Philly up the Eastern Shore. Plus, no offense to my NOVA friends but it sucks up there. At least Philly is fun. Sketchy but fun.

I just did the beer finder...no products available within 100 miles. I like beer a lot but with the kid now my personal distro limit tops off at about 50 miles on a really good day with a babysitter lol.

Well, if you are hell bent for a Philly visit I would strongly recommend that you come up when the Philadelphia Real Ale Invitational at Yards Brewing Co. occurs which was May 1st last year. You will get to drink Yards (and other breweries beers) on cask and you can even buy your bottled Brawler beers there. One stop shopping.

    Cheers!

Belvoir Brewery make a cracking Mild at 3.4% ABV. It is basically a resurrected Shipstone's Mild of fond memory.
In keeping with the true tradition of Dark Mild the colour and much of the flavour comes from the brewing sugars rather than roast grains.

    Honourable mention goes to Moorhouse's Black Cat ;
and Elgood's Black Dog come to mind.

So a place like Yards has dedicated cellarmen who actually take care of the casks the way it's done in the UK?

When I was enjoying the dark mild I reference in my prior post I have to admit that I thought of your postings about the joys of truly settling in and sessioning an English style low ABV beer - appreciating how they evolve and get better as you drink them one after another.

"Now I really see what that British guy on BA is talking about!"

    Cheers!

Yards Brawler is the best. I bought two beers for myself to bring back to Chicago - Yards brawler and Troegs Troegenator. There just is not a well done mild available in Chicago.

no more sketchy than east DC, plus Philly has the best sports teams in the country (no bias)

I remember when I had my first (and sadly only) can of Cains mild. At 3.2%, the beer was a revelation. Sure, being in England and having a cask Harvey's Mild that was conditioned at the brewery would probably trump that imported Cains can without any difficulty, but it was a memorable beer. Since then, the supply of imported mild has dried up by me. It's gone from rare to nonexistent. I used to see Moorhouse Black Cat and Celt Dark-Age for a brief period. I have never seen a cask mild brought over here.

I never really cared for any bottled US brewed mild. Epic Mid Mountain, Sam Adams Ruby... yeah, even Yard's Brawler. I did like Goose Island's Mild Winter but that's been replaced (downgraded) with Goose Winter Ale. I also liked the ridiculously priced Evil Twin / Beavertown XXX imperial, but that's a one and done.

I do think that's it definitely a style for "local" brewers via keg and cask (and nitro) in my area. By me, Barrier makes two (one hoppy), Sixpoint makes three-ish, Greenpoint Beer & Ale makes a pale and a dark (I love grabbing a pale mild). Others include Birreria, Brooklyn, Flagship, Yonkers, and Wandering Star.

It's rarer to get US kegged mild from out of state, but I had two from Tired Hands and one from Port City w/ Schlafly in the not too distant past.

Which is best? I don't know. Getting one is so rare as it is.

and the NFL's highest beer prices:grinning:
    1 - Philadelphia Eagles
    Beer Price: $8.50

    Price Per Ounce: $0.71

And finally, topping every other NFL franchise by a comfortable margin in the beer-price-per-ounce category is the Philadelphia Eagles. At an absurd $0.71 per ounce, there's really no way to justify buying a beer at an Eagles game. Frankly, the gang from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" would be outraged.

Ironically if you had been drinking session Milds you probably wouldn't have got loopy, and thus never enticed him to brew his own.

Oh crap, that's right. I've been there twice, and tried multiple beers, but I can't quite remember which ones. I wonder if I had a Mild there, might have been a Pale Mild.

Notch Brewing is a truly unique brewery.

Best Mild? As in mildly hazy? I kid  Good thread, OP. As mentioned already in the thread, I've heard good things about Workingman Mild from Revolution Brewery but have not had it yet unfortunately. Will seek it out next time it's on draft.
