Any homebrewers in here have a good recipe for a NE style IPA? Going to start looking around. Never brewed one and I figured it'd be easier to brew my own than constantly try to track down hops from elsewhere.

I think you just take a regular IPA recipe and add a bunch of flour.

I have one! No flour necessary. We talking extract or all grain? Also do you have the ability to do water adjustments because they will greatly help with nailing the style. If not you will still probably be okay but might lack a bit of body.

    EDIT: Recipe Added below....

The two factors of your water you need to be concerned about are Cl and SO4. I would target the following. CL: 150 ppm SO4: 100 ppm. If you don't know your water profile or don't want to mess with this do nothing but I am convinced that this is a major factor in the character of these beers.

    OG: 1.071
    FG: 1.015
    IBU: 62
    SRM: 6

    BOIL Volume: 7.5 Gallons
    Batch Size: 6 Gallons
    Apparent Attenuation: 78%
Efficiency: 72% (I batch sparge in a cooler)

    Fermentables:
    American 2-Row: 12 Lb.
    Flaked Oats: 2 Lb.
    American White Wheat: 1 Lb.
Honey Malt: 0.5 Lb. (You could also Use C10, C15, or C20 here)
    Carapils: 0.5 Lb.
    Corn Sugar: 0.5 Lb.

Mashed at 151 Degrees for 60 Minutes

    Hops:
    60 Minutes: 1 oz Columbus @ 15.4%AA: 46 IBU
    5 Minutes: 1.5 oz Citra @ 12% AA: 11 IBU
    5 Minutes: 0.75 oz Amarillo @ 7% AA: 2 IBU
    *Flameout: 2.5 oz Citra @ 12% AA: 0 IBU
    *Flameout: 1.25 oz Amarillo @ 7% AA: 0 IBU

*You may also choose to reduce your temperature to 175 degrees before adding these hops and Whirlpool at 170 Degrees for 30 minutes.

    Dry-Hop During ferment in Primary:

    Day 3 Dry-Hop

    2 oz Citra
    1 oz Amarillo

    Day 7 Dry-Hop

    *2 oz Citra
    *1 oz Amarillo

Yeast: 1318 (1500ml starter - I pitch the whole starter but if you plan ahead you could decant)

Fermentation temperature: 66 free rise to 68 - then ramp up to 71 as fermentation slowed down. Cold crash before kegging. Typically I am kegging by day 10, 11, or 12.

Replace hop combination with your favorite. Hops that I would highly consider for these beers are Amarillo, Citra, Mosaic, Galaxy. Some other hops are also okay but you are really looking for that tropical fruit emphasis. Citra and Galaxy is my favorite combo.

    Perfect, thanks Jon!!!

Wow, thanks for the fast and thorough response! I will be putting this to use very soon. I can do both all-grain or extract so I'll experiment. I've never ran the water specs at my house (which I normally use) so maybe it's time to check those out (pretty sure I have a friend who works for the state that can do it). Cheers!

No problem. In general you want less than 10 calculated IBU per %ABV for this style. Beyond that you can mess around with grain bill and hopping schedule. I have recently been adding all of the hops at the end of the boil (1 Minute) and not using any Columbus at 60 minutes. It takes more hops this way but it works great as well. I like very little Crystal malt but you could experiment with 0.25-0.5lbs of various character malts. Hell, I think Julius has a touch of C40 or C60 in it. There is a "Tree House Home Brewers" group on Facebook I could add you to if you want to be able to search through endless information.

    :grimacing: What is that? :grimacing:

I'll mess around with this recipe and will be in touch, really appreciate the help. My CraftWife will appreciate it as well - that is if I can craft it into an enjoyable pour.

So, yesterday I get a BM from @Homebrew titled "Uh-oh". Uh-oh was right, he informed me that a box was set to land on my porch. I get home from work and see that my porch had indeed been violated by this stealth ninja. He was so good that he knew the tricks to keep my early detection system from being able to sense and intercept the incoming bomb. I rummaged through the ruble and found the undetonated portion of the bomb and took it into the house to inspect. Here is what I found:

Wow, a great box of mostly new ticks. B-bot and framinghammer are repeats but am very happy to be able to revisit. There are even a couple new brewery ticks in Thimble Island and Singlecut. And not to leave Sip out as I am very happy to finally get to try this great IPA. Great beers and all right in my wheelhouse.

Included in Dave's BM was the reason for this awesome box of beers. Evidently several of you decided to vote for me in the "best box of the round" LIF. What? Really? This was a total shock to me. You all sent great boxes and there were several that I thought were better than mine. It didn't even occur to me to be on the lookout for this. I'm truly humbled and am very glad that you thought my box was good. That means a lot to me. A huge thanks to @Homebrew for running this LIF and a big thanks to all those whose judgement was impaired and voted for me.

    Cheers!

Great box @Homebrew and very deserving. Shotgunning GBots in the pool seems logical here.

An amazing return fire box arrived from @Elneenee and @Elkevjoe on Fri night. Then, unbeknownst to me, it spent the night on my porch so that I could get that April Fools surprise:

Nut Smasher has been a want for a long time, any Hoof Hearted has been nothing short of incredible each time I've tried it, Yub Nub is a wonderful SW reference for Dire Wolf, and my new brewery tick overall, schmedium is my size and that PBC crowler is getting cracked pronto which makes this a wonderful and unexpected box! Thanks Kevin and Renee!!!
