From this point on, DLD portojohns will be known as Fecal Barrels.

I was nicely toasted during bottle pickup last year, and I still left with a FVM. I basically just followed the crowd.

I actually walked back to the vanilla sections like three times "are you guys sure," "no really, are you sure..." lol...I had a plan that ranked all the beers, I picked up Ronaldo since the vanillas were gone, and since we got to taste DPB and MHJ on draft, I was pretty happy all things considered. But...I didn't stick with the plan to get QHY, Trump or Muerte as our second variant. The exotic allure of Temeculan is mesmerizing once drunk lmao...but looking back, my non-vanilla plan would have been Ronaldo + BADL.

I may, or may not, have taken the list of variants and put them in an excel spreadsheet and ranked them and then emailed myself a copy and brought a hard copy in my pocket. As I was group D, I didn't trust my Dark Lord self to make a good decision.

I had a list on my phone, but there were still several that were jockeying for the "There ain't no Vanilla" in early to mid B (I was leaning toward Bourbon to be safe). Then when I actually got there I had to double take as I saw the French Vanilla Militia sign, and all thought left my mind as I ran to that station. Definitely wasn't expecting any Vanilla to make it to B, so that was a pleasant surprise.

I guess I did have it easier in Group B. There's no telling what I would have done at 3 or 4 PM.

Variant math wasn't too bad for me last year in Group C, but..... I was the DD for the trip to Madison for GTMW tickets after we left the fest.

First and last time I will ever blow a 0.00 on a breathalyzer after DLD.

I'm still hoping I get this surgery soon.... I'll be a shoo-in for a handjee. I've been thinking about what variants I'd take, but am still unsure. Like others have stated, the Muscat barreled stuff has me on the fence and I am a scotch fan, but those Islay scotches are potent and Ard is smokey and peaty.

If this is an epic troll, then kudos, but you took so much time in your response that I am compelled to respond.

Where do I start? First off, are you kidding me? You are clueless in regards to this fest, so I have evidently condescended to you appropriately. You've earned it - well done! That said, you've made many statements that are baseless in fact, but here's the one that rubs me the wrong way:

"Most people go to the fest these days for the guarantee of the variant."

Really - based on what? How many years, exactly, has the fest had variants guaranteed? Hmmmm? One, uno, ein, un, (1) is the correct answer, as in last year, and that was the only year, ever. You knew that, though, right? If so, then why the myopia? Unless you've been going to a fest with guaranteed variants for years that I wasn't aware of? Was I missing something all those years?

Prior to last year, and even before the fest became a ticketed event, it drew over 10,000 people who came there with no guarantee of even getting a bottle of Dark Lord, much less a variant - you knew that, right? Why were those people there? For a guaranteed variant, that wasn't even offered yet? Yes - genius! And, no - it had nothing to do with the bottle share, camaraderie, etc - you know, the kind of stuff that you think has nothing to do with DLD.

And additionally, you do get that this wouldn't be a $180 event if they weren't offering the variant as part of the ticket package? Right?

Seems to me that you are butt hurt because you had the good fortune of getting group A, and had a buyer / trader in hand for a lucrative deal for a Handjee, and now you are wondering if your deal will materialize?

Otherwise, your question of "what would I be doing as opposed to waiting in line for a pre-paid variant" or some such is a sad sad comment on the state of beerdom, or at least your perception of it. If you don't know what to do in that scenario, then you'll never meet me - I'll be roaming the grounds, meeting people, sharing beers, and having a great time - and you'll be standing on line with people at the fest only because they need a variant. I'm guessing I'll have a better time.

And that's sad, and not the point of the fest, but what do I know? Could be that I'm the sad SOB in the minority, and will be sitting at a picnic table all by my lonesome while all the real beer people will be in line, but I doubt it - I'll take that chance.

As for something "concrete" I can tell you - the fest isn't about variants. That's pretty much it, and if you don't get that, then I can't help you.

Hope you have a good time, and all your beer dreams come true.
